More Work, Less Play For Older Canadians

Posted on Friday, July 28 at 09:25 by RPW
http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2006/07/26/stats-work.html Commentary: Could it be that more "baby boomers" will NOT be retiring and sucking the health-care system dry? Speaking as a "boomer" who was not wise in his youth, and did not go into government service (with fat pensions), or pursue the the dot-com phenomena (before it tanked), or decided that being a hippy sucked (and lunged after the pot o' gold, stomping on all and sundry who got in their way), I am indeed one of those "more Canadians" who finds living on a maximum pension(s) of $600/month doesn't quite "make the cut" (by at least $1500!). Fortunately,. I am self-employed, in a trade in much demand, and haven't lost any vital limbs......... Unfortunately, I need to be in a large urban setting (read: expensive) to ply my trade, as a robot hasn't been built yet that would allow me to move to the hinterland, and direct my work from there over the internet.......... Myself, I can't really ever see me retiring before 70-75. Even then, I'm working on the assumption that the Canada Pension, or any pension plan for that matter, will be pretty much an extinct species by the time I reach that age.

No choice either. The bills keep coming at the age 55 and above. Unless one could stash away the money and meet the cost of living, they still have to work. Two incomes barely make it and how is one expected to live on nothing from age 55 to 65. I suppose at that age one can get elected and eventualy get an indexed pension but not everyone is a thief/lawyer etc. Working for less is becoming the norm for anyone desperate to keep a job.

We could form a club, exclusive to everyone who cannot afford to retire --- except we all have to work, and would have trouble getting to the meetings............

I think that I heard some sort of rumour that the "freedom 55" ad (by whoever) has been trashed..........

I haved a family memeber living in Whiterock, BC and they said that most of the retail stores have over 60's as clerks topping up their pensions in order to stay in their homes in this expensive area. When I think about young people trying to live in these areas without $100,000+ a year jobs they can't. So someone will have to take over the menial jobs and will not be someone making only $10.00 an hour.

Part of the neoconazi strategy is to make people work longer and roll back any possibilty of even a few years of freedom for working people. Given the rise in the level of productivity over the last 40 years, no one should have to be a wage slave for more than 25 years. But the greed creeps have seized this productivity gain for themnselves and its bugger the work force. How long are people going to tolerate having this bunch of pschyopaths ruling them, when we could so easily have a society where everyone benefits?

The "flavour" of the article suggests that Canadians are working past 55 in order to fill in their time, to make a little spending money sort of thing. No need to panic, folks! All is still well in Whoville. Your government is taing care of you. My goodness, but times are good, aren't they? Yes indeedy........just dandy.......
