“There’s just a tremendous amount of interest now in seeking that secure and reliable supply of oil and gas -- and of course they’re looking to Canada and in particular Alberta,” Klein said.
Prior to this planned visit, Klein met with Cheney twice in Washington D.C.
However, a spokesperson for the vice president’s office declined to confirm his reported visit today.
“I have no information on that available at the moment,” said Scott Popham, communications co-ordinator with the vice president’s office.
He said he cannot say if and when it’s going to happen.
Wood Buffalo MLA Guy Boutilier said this visit would be quite enormous if it’s to take place.
“They (the U.S.) are interested in the oilsands tremendously,” said Boutilier.
Details of Cheney’s visit remain unknown. But a spokesperson for Klein said Saturday the visit has been in the works for quite some time.
“He’s very welcome here,” said Marisa Etmanski. “We consider the Americans friends and are very happy with the kind of working relationship we have with them.”
Last year the U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow toured the oilsands plants here with federal Finance Minister Ralph Goodale.
Klein has travelled to Washington twice in recent years, meeting with Cheney on at least one occasion.
