GlobaLIESation

Slowly we are losing our choice. MTV tells our impressionable youth what to listen to and what to wear. Cnn and the others decide what news is and what is not. Sure we can change the station. Unfortunately that’s like switching from Coke to Pepsi. Some say that is choice, I say is controlled preference. It’s name recognition, its brand recognition; it’s a name repetition game. I can tell you, as I stare out my window typing away that Starbucks is green, CNN is red, and Verizon has the red V. My brain is stamped with these impressions. Like fish in a tank they float around every so often coming to the surface and I need them. I don’t simply want a coffee; I need a Venti Latte for $4.50. It’s not just the news, I need extra news with a sidebar or even streaming quotes flashing underneath as a reporter, report the weather every fifteen minutes, I need to know about and earth quake and murders. Fill my head with it all, it’s only a hard drive for corporate sponsorship. Along with constant reminders how dangerous the world is. Why is the news always trying to scare me? If I want to hear about peace and love I can switch to so me bible beating TV station offering gods forgiveness for a hundred buck. As I channel jockey I can watch the fat guy yelling it’s a Micky Mantle baseball card and its worth three hundred dollars. That kind fat man will sell it to me for 29.99 all I have to do is pick up the phone and call. Why is the fat guy so nice? Or is he? There is a station for everybody, choice is alive. There is the crime station, the love station, the station for woman. If I want more of the weather they have their own station too. All this choice from one remote, well I want two remotes. I want the remote that tells us the truth. I want the remote where I can flick and find news that is honest and admits that sometimes our president is a horse’s ass. I want the weather man to tell us the truth; I want him to tell us to look out the window because weather people are never correct. I mean is this too much to ask? I want that second remote for people who can look beyond the lies. I want the remote that offers a presidential debate that does not give the questions to the candidates before hand. Isn’t that the same as in school knowing the questions before the test? It creates the opportunity for a candidate to be prepared. I want the candidate that can think on his or heir’s toes. I mean, it’s the presidency a quick thinker is needed. Now that I mention the word her and considering women make up a large percent of the population, where is the choice of male or female candidate? Politics is like my remote with only two stations. Democrat or Republican, sure there are other parties that run, however, for some odd reason my remote just never seem to tune into those other station. Democrats on one side Republicans on the other. We have a choice of either or, our choice does not go beyond either or. Either or sounds limited, left or right. I want the station I can flick to that has commercials that offer truth. I want the product that tells us the truth. I’m tired of hearing the words new and improved. Does that mean your last version sucked? If so how about a refund? Or are you telling us you only redesigned the packaging and now have a more viable spokes person to market your product? I want the car salesman to openly admit his cars are ok but it beats walking. Maybe I just want truth; I don’t want to see a cartoon of roaches walking into a hotel. I’m a grown up, I’m intelligent, just tell me it works. The question is who is to blame? The advertisers, the ad executive are who create these mindless inventions of dramatized unreality? Do they really perceive the public as that stupid? I guess so, it’s been happening since I was a kid. When do we as consumers stand up and take action for being looked at like were dumb? When do people write to a company and simply acknowledge the product is fine but the advertising is insulting? All advertising does is make our youth mask who they are inside and create an image on brand name clothing. There is something amiss in this situation. Sneakers should not cost what they cost, jeans shouldn’t either. Both are basic necessities. Our fashion statement to the world brought to you by MTV or VH1? Or the best coffee available on any street corner in the United States of America provided by Starbucks, Inc? Take your laptop and you can sit there all day and drink their expensive coffee and surf the net. I believe this is a wonderful country, however, I believe were a little off track. Perhaps other countries do not want to participate in our globalization. Perhaps those countries see us as an imperial power in an expansion mode. Is it at all possible some countries see us for what we are? American’s are probably the hardest working people in the world. We spend most of our money trying to live and our extra money trying to get a little more. Our taxes balloon every year to new heights. Our liability to the government is rising not reducing, some one eventually will have to pay for all the bombs we drop. How do we consider ourselves the most modern of nations when our murder rate is the highest? How do we consider ourselves the most advanced when we consume more cocaine then any other nation? How do we call ourselves a democracy when we have mandatory minimums for first time offenders? How are we a kinder and gentler nation when we execute so many in this country? It appears that justice is blind to those that can afford it, to those that cannot justice sees all. I read a quote in a book once, where an individual said that American citizens wouldn’t know the difference between a good or bad government. I hate to say it but there is some truth there. Most Americans are blind to what democracy is and should be. Are American’s really better then the rest of the world? Is our way so right? Truthfully I don’t know and probably will never know. However, I want truth not corporateLIESation, I want culture, I want more choice then either or. I want the subculture of our society to continue to exist. I don’t want America to be the defenders of the so called free world. I want America to solve its own problems before we dictate how the rest of the world should be. Very interesting and so true; I just heard a comment from a Canadian who has lived in the States for several years, he is also a Canadian Vet, very nice fellow, well spoken and seemingly intelligent but....he claims that George Bush is terrific and that he is the only one capable of being the World Leader, he doesn't think Kerry could do the job and since his wife has money he'll be alright. So the next question was, 'Why do you think we need a World Leader?' Well we just do and Bush is the best guy for the job! His words.

Scary, very scary. I just cannot get my mind around that concept, why would we ever want one man ruling the world? Why would any intelligent person consider this a positive step? I don't care who the one man is, no one person should ever be given that much power!

I rarely watch tv anymore, the constant advertising and stupidity offends me. And anything that is worthwhile watching they take off. Here in Victoria, one of our TV stations used to have a really good program where Moe Sihota on the left and NOrm Spectre on the right debated the latest political issues. They took it off. They also used to have a weekly show about the enviromental issues affecting Vancouver Island. Another very worthwhile and interesting program. They took that one off too. I don't know what they replaced them with because I don't watch the channel anymore.

Yeah, excellent article! It`s true, people want REAL choices! That`s all i hear from people who were either lucky in life, or born rich- 'it`s all about choices' they say. Really? Some are born with better choices than others! And it is that class who is reducing our choices on TV, radio, in employment, in products, life in general!

Mr Ahearn says consumer choices are really ‘controlled preferences’ and he is right. It IS control over our preferences and it is called neuro-marketing. Look it up and ask yourself if this is innovative technological progress. <p>As my choices expand, the less I have to say in the matter. Today on CBC radio, I heard the average North American child sees 10,000 food commercials a year. We are taught to think that happiness is synonymous with pleasure and in quick gratification it will be found. Commercialism is nothing more than mental masturbation for the masses. Obesity is on the increase but are we happier for it ? Will having the choice between 30 different kinds of dental floss or 257 brands of jeans bring more joy into my life ?</p> <p>So why don’t we just chuck it all and refuse to be controlled or manipulated. Easier said than done. Who amongst us can throw the first stone and say to be beyond being manipulated at any level. Do you really think all this ‘new marketing’ approach is restricted to consumerism ? Governments and religions have been using mind control for a long long time and the people have always followed. Well not always, sometimes when the folly becomes too much, they have been known to rebel en masse. But in general, they’d rather just believe and be told rather than learning for themselves.</p> <p>We like to think of ourselves as having evolved, being of more sound judgment and knowledgeable than say any poor medirval average serf bugger. Are we really ? He was under lordship control and owed his allegiance to his ‘protector’. Who are our masters and protectors today ?</p> We are all so pitifully gullible, it's enough to make us all sick. This is what Mr Ahearn is telling us.

<p>I remember myself almost buying into this new marketing world after reading the book E-Myth by Michael Gerber. In this book he talks companies knowing everything about their customers. The author seems to think that this new marketing world is a positive step for consumers and companies. Although he has some interesting things to say about how it can benefit the consumer in many ways, I can't say I'm totally convinced. <p>Kevin<br> <a href="http://www.kevingagnon.ca/">www.kevingagnon.ca</a> <br><br><p>---<br>"Love actually, is all around us" --From the movie Love Actually.

Yes Kevin, that is what all those point cards are about, tracking your buying patterns, Shoppers, Staples, Safeway etc. all have these point cards. Air Miles, I'm not flying so don't use it. I don't use them because they really don't give me anything and are just a way to follow me and my needs. I did use the Staples one but realized that the dividends and bonus coupons never apply to my purchases.

I have a Chapters discount card. Actually I save between $200 and $400 a year using this card. I buy allot of books. Sometimes I can't keep up with my book buying, so I have to stop for a bit to catch up. My point though is sometimes these discount cards are nice for saving. I wonder if I can some how legally be protected from Chapters/Coles/Indigo from selling my information?

I give wrong demographic info to mess with their heads. Anyone can be a 95 yr old male that in the military making 50,000 year with 6 dependants, or a 19 yr old female that is an executive making 150,000 yr and is the head of the household... the sillier the better.

Even the Sihota/Spectre choice is a box -- I know from
experience there is no easily definable left/right. How
about a debate with mulitple voices including left voices
that might disagree with Sihota, or right voices that
might be more radical than Sihota on some points.
This of course is unfathomable within the corporate
media which can't even stomach a left voice unless it is
on a red herring like gay marriage/divorce (I speak here
as a longtime gay activist and proponent of recognizing
all domestic relationships not just gay or straight
    marriage/divorce.)

I turned my tv off after 9/11 and then slowly even CBC
radio went off when the Saddam bashing started.
Turning off corporate media and refusing to buy into
Starbucks as the only way coffee tastes is a step out of
    the matrix.

More attention to the local solutions to the
corporatization of our culture is desperately needed --
things like jazz clubs and open mikes, local theatre,
local organic markets, city gardens, naturopathy, your
bicycle, solar panel, etc. The solutions are small, local
and right before our eyes unless we are so dazzled by
the spectacle we can't see them for the bright lights,
    sequins and tear gas.

    I'm with you, anon.

I am on a new mission, and I just bought a cottage with no services. Outhouse, nothing else.

I may be off the internet for a while until I get a few things sorted out, but I am giving up TV and catch up on some reading. I also have a wonderful 14 lb lapdog (a little big for a lapdog, but what the heck - he's my bud.)

The junk is not worth watching, and sitcoms just bum me out.

Looking forward to a new life, wish me luck.

Worried about being tracked? This guy did something about it:

(I emailed him asking for a sticker a while back, but never got a reply. I don't think he's taking new clones anymore)
