"Taxation Without Representation" was the term that sparked the Boston Tea Party. The monarchy in England was taxing the stuffing out of 'the colonys', but not doing anything in return.<p> Just like today with Ottawa, here out West.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain

Stop it, doc. Toronto pays 9 billion more in taxes than it gets back in taxes, even though millions live there, who are Canadians too. The western crap has to go. Historically, the west has been less populated, therefore less clout, if you don\'t like it, then let\'s get a new government in there --but please don\'t tell me Stephen Harper will actually put much of anything in your pocket.

-There is NO place more under-represented in Canada than Toronto. We don\'t have international clout, we don\'t have National clout, we don\'t even have provincial clout! We Ontarians just heard that Liberal (god I hate Liberals) Premier Dalton McGuinty won\'t rule out selling:

1 -The LCBO, Ontario\'s liquor control board, worth almost 900 million/year inrevenue, as well as a great source of affordable liquor, as they buy a tonne, and control sales to minors well, and (even worse)

2 - TVO, Ontario\'s educational, non-profit TV station, with excellent current affiars, arts, nature, and political programming, with the legendary Saturday Night at the Movies.

Imagine that, considering selling 2 historic assets, akin to selling your child to pay the rent, when Ontario\'s taxes aren\'t even as high as New York\'s, and were cut over 200 times by Mike Harris.

P.S. Those asset-sales arent\'t enough to stave off a service-cut as well, never mind the Liberals campaigned on revitalization. Reminds me of the Globe\'s laughable \"Phone in and tell us what Paul Martin should cut\" crap. In bed with the Liberals.

I don`t know, doc, you see, the east footed the bill for the west before the oil boom. And it`s not that Ottawa doesn`t want to invest in the west. But the problem is, all provinces now, are on this kick about how Ottawa shouldn`t barge in on their jurisdiction. So it is primarily your own provincial government that is handcuffing itself on relying totally on energy exports! This so-called western alienation thing is old, tired, and BOGUS! I don`t know, I just don`t see what beef the west has with the east. Why can`t western and eastern Canada just UNITE and fight US imperialism and corporate fascism? Balkanization of Canada is exactly what the US and our sellout leaders want!

On the contrary, I think Westerners and Easterners get along just fine. It's westerners and *Ottawa* (as I said in my original post) that have some kissing and making up to do.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain

I agree western alientation isn\'t all bogus.

That said, it\'s not electing parties like the Canadian Alliance that will help. I think the right form of proportional representation might smooth political representation out a bit instead of exacerbating regional differences.

And I\'m sick of this unilateralist crap Klein keeps pulling--we\'re not the freakin COUNTRY of Alberta. Exhibit A and B would be Iraq and the Kyoto Accord. And please, public car insurance! My kids need to eat! Although with the more conservative Martin in power I suppose differences between King Ralph and Ottawa might be eased.

Sorry. Too many right-wingers. We need a centre-left government. Period.

Some may not like it, but globalization calls for MORE government and MORE regulations, enforceable regulations.

The idea of tax cuts is dead. It doesn\'t work. The benefit of tax cuts is loss of health care and other social benefits.

The top countries in the world have higher taxes than us, and less poverty.

    Balance that one !!

Couldn\'t agree more Susan, I am sick of King Ralph thinking he\'s running the country of Alberta also, and it isn\'t helping the politcal crap we are seeing everywhere. Seems to me the Provincial PC\'s are Federal Liberals in disguise. They all sound the same now, to me anyway. We take you give, corporations need more, little people get less!

But the new Finance minister is just talking about the history he learned in school, not much Canadian cause that wasn\'t important, but whatever happened to the south was mega important. If he equates that story to Canada perhaps it is his subconscious fearing the masses will revolt in the future!
