Protestors=Criminals In America

Posted on Thursday, January 29 at 21:29 by sthompson
This crackdown took a violent turn in late November at the Miami protests against the Free Trade Area of the Americas and at an anti-war protest at the Port of Oakland last April. In both cases, the police used astonishing force to break up protests. But even when the police do not engage in violence, they sometimes blatantly interfere with the right to dissent by preemptively arresting people on specious grounds.

    I love the concept of "Free Speech Zones". George Orwell would be proud, and somewhat embarrassed he didn't think of it first.<p> So, when FBI realize that all some terrorist has to do is hold a 'I (heart) Bush' sign to get to the front of the line and close to Bush before detonating, will 'free speech' in general be supressed, not just negative free-speech?<p> Kinda scary that there is more right to protest in Russia, Iran and Iraq than the so called 'land of the free'.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />"The greatest price of not participating in politics is being governed by your inferiors." Uh huh. I remember countless riots at Queen\'s Park during Harris\' reign. The police even arrested people at a peaceful free homeless lunch in Yorkville. Mike Harris was egged in his 1st year in office.

    I also remember the protest at Queen\'s park to demand action on homelessness and affordable housing, which turned into a riot. Although it isn\'t exactly a good thing, I found it funny to see the police take a beating for a change. Protestors threw eggs, rocks, and beer bottles filled with urine at police. The officers were dropping like flies.

    That being said, protests only work in larger numbers, or of the poor protest where the rich LIVE, not just work.

    Yeah, I remember those riots too. i tried to tell people that various levels of government started the violence when they enacted policies and made cuts to health care, education, and affordable housing, which put people out on the street, and killed others who suddenly had to wait for hospital beds. The corporations who close up shop and relocate to 3rd world countries, putting people out of work also contributed to the violence. (All the while this happens, boards of directors and CEO`s reward themselves with millions of dollars in bonuses.) All the people at protests like Queens park wanted was for government to take action to curb this assault on social and economic justice! But the cops and the army, they have that blind sense of duty, and they attack the protesters when given orders, just like mindless borg drones! Whatever happened to the police motto \'To serve and protect?\' I thought the army was supposed to protect the people? It reminds me of Tiannamen square, 1989, where the PEOPLE`S LIBERATION ARMY started attacking and murdering the peaceful protesters. Many Chinese students started yelling at the soldiers ,\" Whose army are you?\" Canada`s army, and Canada`s cops, they defend the aggressors, the RICH!!!

    Unfortunately, most people don\'t get it. To us, it all seems so simple. It\'s really not veery complicated at all. But, most people, including young people, can\'t be bothered to understand anything. Too busy chasin\' the babes, or making money so they can party on the weekend.

    Perhaps they should remember back in kindergarten, when they were taught the word \"Share.\" That would be a good start. That being said, NDP tax increases would do little without a complementary reversal of of loss of money sovereignty.

    America will reach a cross-roads in sept of this year at the republican national convention. Early estimates show that the police and military response will rival or exceed that seen at the Miami FTAA meetings. The media all but suppressed the outrageous abuses that took place there.

    Large blocks of NY City will be cordoned off so the Bush gang can do what they do best - plot. Many in NY are pissed that first - the GOP would use NY City as a backdrop to their convention in sept to further milk the Sept 11 tradgedy, but also because they have done next to nothing besides trying to squash investigations into what happened that fateful day.

    It will be interesting to see what happens. If the police and military act like they did in Miami all over again, but this time not against those damn \'hippie communists\' but against Americans excersising their first amendment rights in a political role, there could be hell to pay.

    If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.
