EDMONTON - The Stelmach government has pledged another $420 million to Alberta's oilsands capital to alleviate traffic problems and other woes, as the Conservatives keep priming the provincial cash pump for good-news announcements before an election campaign kicks off.

The premier spent Thursday in Edmonton, staging a cheque presentation for media cameras with Mayor Stephen Mandel, trumpeting a small increase in living subsidies for the disabled and continuing to hint that he may cut health-care premiums.

But Fort McMurray MLA Guy Boutilier stole some of Stelmach's fire, announcing the day's true big-ticket item - the massive investment to be made over three years. Most of the money will go to build interchanges on two of the city's busiest intersections on Highway 63, and the rest to school upgrades, wastewater treatment, a landfill and prisoner holding cells.

The money is on top of the $396 million the province pledged last year for other immediate needs in the boom city, after a provincial report said the government was neglecting McMurray's growing pains.
