Christian Extremist = GOOD; Islamic Extremist = BAD

Few US Presidents have been as openly religious as Bush. Now a new book has lifted the lid on how deep those Christian convictions run. It will stir up controversy at a time when the administration is keen to portray its 'war on terror' as non-religious.

The book, which depicts a President who prays each day and believes he is on a direct mission from God, will give ammunition to critics who claim Bush's administration is heavily influenced by extremist Christians.

Bush is already under fire for allowing the appointment of General William Boykin to head the hunt for Osama bin Laden. Boykin, who speaks at evangelical Christian meetings, once said the war on terror was a fight against Satan, and also told a Somali warlord that, 'My God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God and his was an idol.'

....

Bush said to James Robinson: 'I feel like God wants me to run for President. I can't explain it, but I sense my country is going to need me. Something is going to happen... I know it won't be easy on me or my family, but God wants me to do it.'

In another incident, Mansfield recounts how, on Palm Sunday last year, Bush was flying back from El Salvador aboard the presidential jet Air Force One and seemed to be destined to miss church.

However, knowing that Bush hated to miss a service, some officials suggested they worship in the air. Bush agreed, and soon 40 officials were crammed into the plane's conference room. The service was led by National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, while the lesson was read by close Bush aide Karen Hughes.

The author also proves anecdotes about Bush that had previously been dismissed as false. Rumours that he had prayed with a young soldier who had lost a hand in Iraq were thought to be myth, but Mansfield tracked down witnesses and a hospital chaplain who said that Bush had prayed with the man, ending by kissing him on the forehead and telling him he loved him. 'For me, that sums up Bush's beliefs. He really believes Jesus is taken up in his heart and soul,' Mansfield said.

This is an excellent article. I think the moral is plain, anything in extreme is not good. Personal committment to prayer is good, many people have profound and deep convictions which assist them in doing their job and following a life path. In Canada, usually with the exception of the Alliances, religion and politics are separate and that is how it should remain. I think we have done a good job so far in keeping church and state separate. This overzealousness of the Bush regime is so scary! Now they are talking about democratizing the Middle East, wow! The U.S. fought for and won their democracy, and so did Canadians, although we didn\'t fight as hard some might say,it was more of an evolution away from British rule, however it was our desire, our path, not the path thrust upon us by an outside power. This idea that Christianity is behind the Bush admin regime change, globalization desire is b.s.. If it was such a good idea don\'t you think the Pope would have sent all the Roman Catholics on such a crusade years ago? The democratization, aka. christianization of the Middle East is not going to work, nor is it an admirable crusade. So far Canadians have lived quite peacefully respecting each others religious differences and thankfully our political system isn\'t run by such narrow minded people. This Bush extremist regime, seems to believe that killing those standing in the way of their crusade aspirations is justified. Killing is killing, murdering innocent civilians and bombing the daylights out of a society in order to free them, to your way of life is not honourable, it is dispicable! I can understand one crazy believing he is acting on God\'s wishes, but I can\'t understand an entire government filled with so called intelligent beings following this sickness. There are cults that are revealed on news magazines that aren\'t as crazy as this, and the average person says, \'how can anyone get sucked into such a program\'? Well, what is going on down south, why aren\'t news anchors asking these questions? Why are some Canadians saying let\'s get on this bandwagon? Let us keep our religious beliefs where they belong, private, they are what many of us rely on to help us to get through these crazy days, but they should not be forced upon an entire people. Wars are not fought for religious beliefs, religious beliefs are a smoke screen to hide the real purpose of war, greed!

I absolutely agree with you. No religious belief can ever be forced on any individual. It is his own personal matter. George Bush and his associates have become blind in their lust for power. They are using everything that helps them in becoming powerful, including religion and religious sentiments of people. It is absolutely unjust and immoral to go and kill innocent civilians in the name of freeing them. Even a 10-year old would find this logic absurd. It's oil, power, money...That's what it's all about.

God Bless Humanity and save us from such cold hearted people.
