I'd have deserted to if I was expected to do what I read in the article.

That is no way to "win the hearts and minds" of the people you are supposed to be liberating.

Even now after the Libby trial, people will still be considered deserters if they refuse to fight in Iraq. A war proven to not be a war but an actual invasion. There are still Americans who justify the action because Saddam Hussein was captured and executed. Nothing has changed the mentality since Hiroshima.
