Kirby Not Credible

Posted on Tuesday, February 14 at 09:44 by hoopoe
The Hon. Michael J.L. Kirby, is the head of the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology that has conducting research and producing Parliamentary Reports of "Reforming" Medicare in Canada. For the past fifteen years Senator Kirby has been an active member of the board of directors of the U.S.-based multinational private for-profit health care provider, Extendicare Inc. In its last annual report the company proclaimed that it is looking for expansion in long-term care with "positive impact on [commercial] profitability."

American greed-driven private health care and insurance companies are eager to profit from the dismantling of the public health care system.

The Kirby Sham Committee Report

Headed by Liberal Senator Michael Kirby, Board member of American private nursing home giant Extendicare Inc., aided by Senator Wilbert Keon, a bigwig at Worldheart corp. and Senator Yves Morin in charge of facilitating the commercialization of health research in Canada, this Senate committee apparent re-scheduled the timing of the release of its reports conveniently preempting Romanow. In a report released more than a year ago, Kirby's committee sets out a list of ways to privatize the health care system; and calls for an end to the alleged "archaic public Medicare model"; and furthermore suggests tossing out the "public administration" principle of the Canada Health Act. Without bothering to provide any evidence or participatory democratic support, and in contradiction to the committee's previous papers, the Report suggests that the federal government consider "privatized service delivery", "user fees" and "medical savings accounts" in a bid to create an American-inspired "21st-century health service industry".

why is there no citizens nonpartisan chapters across Canaduh that our employees are supervised by?
an Antidote: A friend once told his dad in a smart assed way that he had decided to be a career criminal as an occupation.
His father replied how skewed Gerry’s thinking was with the rejoinder
“Son, once again you have it wrong, become a plotician, steal from everybody and bridges will be built in your honour.”

that was 35 years ago and we still "elect" crooks

The fact that he isn't credible now and as per Wayne's, maybe never was, is not as important as the fact that he is influencing the dismantling of our healthcare system. That is something to be concerned about. It is time that people had the facts and this entire mess was exposed. Healthcare is affordable, public, non-profit, for the people of this country, it always has been, it is simply the desire of those in the profit making circles who want it destroyed so they can make a buck.

So Kirby isn't credible because he has some business connections?

Well, I'd argue in return that recommendations on the Canadian health care system made by Roy Romanow, who is not only a New Democrat but a *Saskatchewan* New Democrat for crying out loud, were bound to be biased in favour of preservation of the status quo or expansion of the public system. You might as well have had Shirley Douglas heading up that committee.

Oh, but I guess bias only counts if there's an element of personal financial gain to it.

Romanow headed the commission, he wasn't the only person involved. He and his staff consulted Canadians all across Canada and I have spoken to some of those people who felt very pleased to have been asked for their input- that is democracy! the fact that it has been ignored is the other problem we have in Canada, which isn't democratic!

Having business interests is one thing and being in a position to influence policy to personally profit from those interests now or in the future is quite another. To put in plainly for you, it's called conflict of interest. Roy Romanow had no potential for personal profiteering and his findings were indeed not based on his own views but are the conclusions after thoroughly and extensively consulting ordinary Canadians about what they want their healthcare system to be. Your argument regarding Romanow is a nonstarter.

As an aside, there is no such thing as an individualist, as you cannot help but be a member of society. In a modern society, this of necessity involves dependence on each other to a huge degree which in turn implies that we owe something to society for the benefits we receive from being a member of it. Of course, I suppose you could live without input from the rest in a cold damp cave in the stone age with nothing but the sticks and stones you can manage to gather for yourself.
