Now government-backed forces in Sudan have been accused of killing 30,000 people and displacing a million in the Darfur region, but the world is again just watching. "I am just disgusted with the lame and obtuse responses coming from Canada and the western world," he told the Canadian Press on Wednesday. http://www.mytelus.com/news/article.do?pageID=cbc/canada_home&articleID=1702863

Romeo is right. Canada and other western countries should be doing much more in Sudan. As Paul Harris pointed out here a few days ago, we should be doing more in other parts of Africa too.

We are, I think, creating a huge monster in the non-wealthy parts of the world. When that monster begins acting up we will once again look around and say, "How did this happen?"

Well I think far too much of our political energy is put into dancing to the tune played for us from south of the border, and not enough time, research and planning goes into our own concerns and those around the world. We don't need to be led,we can as history has shown, be leaders ourselves!

You manage to take a dig at the Americans over this issue in order to excuse the lack of Canadian action - that's rich, considering nobody would be hearing anything about the Sudan if it weren't for the Americans pushing the issue for weeks now at the UN and elsewhere. The UN would have preferred to do nothing over this issue in order not to upset their main vocal constituency - the Arab countries. Western nations, Canada included, didn't lift a finger until the Americans managed to make this an issue. Jeez, get past your biases and see what's going on.

I am not taking a dig at anyone other than to point out where our energy is focused; that is the fault of our own administration, nobody tells us where our priorities should be but us.

Interesting role reversal. The UN did more than the US and UK wanted done in Rwanda - which was claimed by the UN "what went wrong" reports at the time but is now backed by declassified US documents. Poor ol' Romeo - as long as it's brown people seeking democracy that are dying USUK is satisfied and its colonies (incl us) tend to play along.
Anyway, it's damn silly of Shrub supporters like my MLA (!) to have tried to peddle me the conquest of Iraq with "look what the UN did for Rwanda." It wasn't much - but it was more than USUK wanted.

Rwanda was a Beligan Colony part of the former Belgian Congo. The ones who fucked up Rwanda the most were the french they had a vested interest in this region and their soldiers were the ones who trained the Hutu controlled Rwandan army. They also aided in protecting Rwandan war criminals in a zone their armys et up in Rwanada to help "so called refugees" instead it was used to harbour terrorists.
