I Spy With My Little Cellphone

Posted on Monday, August 21 at 08:58 by Diogenes
When looking after his 11-year-old great-grandson, Harrell Malone of Fort Worth finds it helpful that the boy has a cellphone. "When he's allowed to go somewhere, he has to check in," Malone said. "It provides a longer leash." Several cellphone companies are beginning to promote their handsets' GPS tracking capabilities. The most aggressive has been Disney, whose cellphone service, Disney Mobile, debuted in June. The phones' Family Locator feature allows parents to see, via their own phone or a password-protected Web site, the location of their child's phone on a map. The service allows five free Family Locator requests per month, with additional requests costing 49 cents each. http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/business/15319409.htm [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on August 21, 2006]

"When he's allowed to go somewhere, he has to check in," Malone said. "It provides a longer leash."

And millions of abusive control freak spouses will cheer in victory as they get an even tighter grip on their victims with this convienient electronic leash.

I think they call this pathological... Not to mention a huge waste of resource, huge pollution etc if this is really a trend.

    LOL.

Heaven forbid, they should just turn it off.

The sad thing with abusers is that they would lock onto the fact that the cell phone was off as "proof" of some perceived infidelity, regardless of the validity of the reason for it's being off in the first place.

I've help people in similar positions before, and all their turning the cell phone of did was ensure they walked into a Force 9 sh*tstorm as soon as they walked through the door.

True, but I'd like to think I'd trust my children enough not to have to delve this deep into their personal lives. Give them limits, punish obvious infractions of those limits.

Many parents may think this is just another tool, should their children be kidnapped. But kids will find ways around it.

I didn't make myself as clear as I thought, my bad.

I was refering specifically to spouses who are being abused by their significant others.

Then again, the same people are probably responsible for both spousal and child abuse.

Either way, giving people like these the ability to locate their victims can not be considered a good thing.

Dr C, have you been reading the "Conservative to English Dictionary and Phrasebook" again?
