American fib factory
By Eric Margolis -- Contributing Foreign Editor

THE WHITE House's Iraq fib factory went into overdrive last week, ballyhooing claims that the new "caretaker government" the UN had supposedly just installed in Baghdad was "fully sovereign" and "totally independent."

We would like to believe American president George Bush. But this latest claim comes from the same truth-deficient people who concocted Iraq's imminent threat to destroy the U.S. with nuclear and germ weapons, Saddam Hussein's vans and drones of death, Saddam's tryst with Osama bin Laden, and a slew of other preposterous whoppers that would have made the Nazis' propagandist, Dr. Joseph Goebbels, blush deep crimson.

I think the Boondocks says it best:

    (Apparently an actual televised exchange)
VP Cheney: "The Iraqi people will have TOTAL control over their country. We're handing over absolute and complete power."
News Anchor: "Well, I guess that's complete power."
    VP Cheney: "With limits, yes."

Could that be called "spin" ?

This is the continuing saga of the Eric Margolis diatribe against the United States. Margolis has interpreted the situation incorrectly so many times it's a wonder he still gets paid to do this work - that's the catch though, people want to read diatribes against the U.S. - it sells. His pedantic diatribes against the U.S. probably go over well with his Arabic in-laws too, never hurts to suck up to the in-laws!

Margolis has Arabic in-laws? Well that means I have to hate him then! O.K. Thanks Anon

I'm with you 4Canada, for sure that must be the reason he writes as he does to suck up to the in-laws...come on really. Also I never got the feeling it was seen as popular to criticize the U.S. admin, in fact I get the feeling people are putting their lives on the line to do it. I must be wrong, it's just all those in-laws>>>

Oh please; it's the damned Canadian past-time to slag on the Americans.

  7. Mon Jun 14, 2004 7:06 pm
Oh please; it's the American admin that provokes our anger, not the American people.

Think: Bush says God tells him what to do.

Hearing voices is a disease, and it can be treated.

    Stick to the facts:

    - 14 permanant military bases for 100,000+ US troops.

    - The biggest US Embassy on the globe (for 3,000+ US agents) built in the former dictator's palace, to be headed by that lover-of-human-rights, John Negroponte.

    Sovereignty? Freedom? Liberation? Says who!?

We still have bases in Germany and Japan by the consent of the people there. a hold over from the Cold War, now the threat is from the middle east. It took years to rebuild Europe after the war (on the backs of the American tax payer) as it will for Iraq, but it will succeed. Just as the American Republic is not perfect and still evolving, the Iraqies fledgling democracy is taking shape. It will scream and I am sure it will stumble, but if we work together we have the opportunity to do great things in the region. Too bad France, Germany, and Russia were too concerned about the billions of dollars in future oil exploration rights, and the direct pay off by Saddamn via the U.N. oil for food program than the millions of Iraqies living in terror and suppression.

The situation in Europe after WWII was one of massive trade imbalance and formerly sovereign nations working to rebuild after being occupied by the germans. The only way that the current mid-east situation could be analagous is if it were the Third Reich which was giving the economic support to western europe, as they were the ones to invade and destroy the infrastructure. You can't claim to be the hero when you're also the one that caused the damage in the first place.

Sorry, but the damage caused was not only due to war but by years of sanctions and Saddam's diversions of humantarian aid, again some of which was used to bribe. If you recall in the late 90's and before 9/11 it was France, Germany, and Russia that were leading the charge to lift all sanctions against Iraq. we could get into the historical context etc. which is important, but I do not have the time now. The innocents that were killed by collateral damage during the war is tragic, however Saddam was killing his own people at a far greater rate, sometimes the lesser of two evils must be chosen. In which we allow a sick and saddistic person like Saddam, who rules by terror( remember Stalin, not Hitler, Was his idol )
or we make the commitment to War in the hope that it will lead to better lives there, and once again make a positive change in the region. If we work together as democracies we can change the world were everyone can be the masters of their own lives! We will squabble, fight get pissed at each other, but lets find common ground and work together. maybe later we can talk about the "marshall plan"
