Canadian Military Ad Blitz Hits D. C. Subway Stations

Posted on Thursday, March 30 at 10:04 by 4Canada
The poster features a Canadian soldier, weapon in hand, standing alongside Afghans, with the words, "Canadian Troops in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Boots On The Ground. "U.S.-Canada Relations. Security is Our Business." Lt.-Col. Jamie Robertson, the counsellor for military outreach at the Canadian embassy, says it is key to Canadian interests that there be an awareness Ottawa is involved in global security. "In this town, there is a lot of competition for attention," he said. "This is the only way to raise the profile because, at the end of the day, it is all about tangible co-operation and it doesn't get any more tangible than this. "We're doing some heavy lifting there. It's all about security, and Afghanistan is the sharp edge of that stick." http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1143586212173&call_pageid=968332188492 Another ad scam in the works? Why does this government think that we have to go to such lengths to get noticed? When such things are done to get Canada in the "good" books with this administration it is an admission that they are only interested in politics, not the Afghans, not the Canadian military, not democracy, and not peace.... Nothing noble, nothing humane, nothing altruistic, nothing heroic. Just those lego-like-anus-shaped-lips Harper has that snap onto Bush's ass on command. Canada deserves better. 4Canada

    Pathetic!

It appears mr. Harper wants to be in Bush's club. I'm sure when he is kicked out of office due to non-confidence vote in the next couple of years, he will go become some right-wing US media consultant, like his current Minister of Defense.

So it's now a bad thing to get credit for the work we are doing?

Let's get some facts straight here:

    1. Much of the American media is anti-Canadian - for instance FoxNews (which I know none of you care about, but they have a larger following than CNN now so they do matter) was advertising that we didn't do anything to help the US during Katrina - until McKenna went on with Gibson to set the record straight. Nobody complained about that "advertising".
    2. Many Americans still think that 9/11 hijackers came in from Canada - 2 senators made those claims in news reports as justification for stringent border security. Maybe a little reality check could reach some people in the US and do us some good.
    3. Many Americans don't know that Canada is supporting any facet of the WOT. The fact that we are taking a leading role in Afghanistan should be publicized. And if the American media isn't going to do it, then we should.
    4. These advertisements are going on in DC... where most of the lobbyists and politicians live and work. Seems like pretty direct advertising to me.

There is no reason that we should not be getting credit for what we are doing. We are obviously not there for advertising, since it was the Liberals that put us there in the first place and they couldn't do enough to distance themselves from the US. The fact that we are there should be used to advance our own national interest at every opportunity - it's not like advertising the world court or the landmine ban in the US will get us much support or credit.

You guys do nothing but bitch that American's don't know anything about Canada or what we do, but as soon as we do something to educate them (yes, in a totally pragmatic national interest sort of way) you scream that we are kissing ass. Must be nice to always have your cake and eat it too. I'll side with Harper on this and try to promote our own national interest... especially when it coincides with something we'd do anyway.

So, should we hang posters of our seal hunters in D.C. so they can see our National Interests? BTW, still lots of Americans don't even know that Canada is North of USA... so we should also put up World Maps to show them where we are too!

  6. Thu Mar 30, 2006 10:17 pm
If it served our purposes, yes. I don't see how seal hunters would, so I don't think I'd advocate that - but maybe that is the Canada you want to publicize. But stuff like US planes landing in Gander on 9/11, us in Afghanistan or Hati, stuff like that which plays well in the US, yes advertise it. Why shouldn't we be proud of what we do? Why shouldn't we reap rewards? Why shouldn't we counter anti-Canadian sentiment in our largest trading partner? Or are you so jaded that you would slice off your nose to spite your face? Or more to the point are you so anti-Harper that you can't see a decent idea because it comes from someone you abhor?

Somewhere you are correct in that we should do in the USA what we do a lot in other countries in that we advertise Canada as the best place, bla bla bla... We do it a lot in France for example. But it seems from this campain that the only thing from Canada that would please the USA is our military actions... And this surely must be only from Harper's government.

“So it's now a bad thing to get credit for the work we are doing?”

You are assuming that these ads will make a dent in the consciousness of Americans. That’s a stretch.

So what are we doing over there?
We are expected to believe that we can waltz into a deeply traditional society and presto, out pops a democracy. This is naivety bordering on stupidity. I’m sure our “leaders” don’t believe this fantasy that they spew for public consumption.

When Harper said that we needed to be educated to justify our presence in Afghanistan, I guess we meant us in Canada and the USA. What about the rest of the world? Let's think big here!

  10. Thu Mar 30, 2006 11:16 pm
The rest of the world pays attention to news. The US only pays attention to the US.

These ads are pretty targeted, being on a subway station below the Pentagon. Really, all we need to reach are the people it matters to, and the rest will get the message.

What kind of credit are you talking about? Do we go to war for CREDIT? How much credit is each dead soldier worth? You're willing to have our military killed and become murderers so that you can have some credit from one of the most morally bankrupt nations on the planet? Well you go for it. War is like porn and I think you are addicted to it.

What message Dr. C? And why should the USA care about what we are doing and give us some kind of back slap for it? We're paying for it ourselves. I'm sorry I just can't wrap my brain around this kind of jumping up and down for attention. There is nothing the matter with Canada without the USA's approval!!!!!

The message that no matter how much Fox "news" would have them believe otherwise, Canadians are their friends.

Whether you agree with our actions in Afghanistan or not (yea, I know "not" ;-) ) the US public always stands behind their military. If we show them that we do the same, and our military stands with theirs, it goes a long way towards dispelling the Fox "news" mentality. For the last 15 years that I can remember, we've stood beside the US on everything but Iraq. Strange that they villify us for that, but say nothing about other allies (Germany, France . . .) that also didn't believe Iraq was an honourable fight.

Personally, I think this is a low cost ($18,000) way to get some goodwill. And it's not terribly new, the website canaidanally.ca has been up a couple years.

    Dr. C.

Unfortunately I think that the whole tone and approach is ass backwards. The promotion or glorification of war in these times is really a sign of a diseased culture. I would rather that we formed alliances with the millions of Americans that see their country turning it’s ideals upside down. Not to mention that most regular FOX news viewers are as dumb as a sack of hammers. (According to surveys done in the US about the type of viewers that watch certain channels.) Are these the people that we want to impress? Can skulls that thick be penetrated?

Canada has a lot more to offer than soldiers for resource wars. We seem to be stuck in these dead end frames of reference in our collective debates right now concerning international matters.
