O'Connor Attacked For Not Taking Part In Afghanistan Debate

Posted on Tuesday, February 28 at 10:05 by 4Canada
In an on-line exchange on Globeandmail.com Monday afternoon, Liberal Ujjal Dosanjh, Bloc MP Claude Bachand and the NDP's Dawn Black all expressed varying degrees of support for the previous Liberal government's move to send 2,200 Canadian soldiers to help restore order in volatile Kandahar Province, in southern Afghanistan. But all three defence critics slammed the government for restricting Parliamentary discussion of the issue to an update by the defence minister when the House reconvenes in April. "The Bloc Québécois has always argued that Parliament has to be involved," he wrote. "A decision from Parliament is much more decisive than a cabinet decision. The fact that decisions in Parliament are public gives a better understanding of all the issues of the mission to the whole population of Canada." Ms. Black said the decision to avoid a vote, or even a take-note debate, is clearly at odds with Prime Minister's promise during the election campaign to put all serious issues before Parliament. "I'm shocked that the Minister [Mr. O'Connor] has contradicted that commitment," she said. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060227.woconn0227/BNStory/National [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on March 1, 2006]

Gee, if all the parties are "more-or-less in favour of the Liberal decision to deploy 2200 troops" - something's wrong with this picture.

If 62 per cent of the people are against it, who is representing us?

This means the people - that's us - will have to take it to O'Connor.

Now if I could only figure out how to e-mail him!

I tried minister@dnd.gc.ca but it bounced. So now I just tried minister@forces.gc.ca

We've got to make him listen, and get our soldiers out of there.

Typical of the Conservative party really... why hold a vote you know you will lose? Like Iraq, public opinion doesn't matter to Harper's Conservatives. One in four Canadians voted for them - that's a mandate to do whatever they want!!

Next up missile defense, then quickly after that - deep penetration.

    ---
If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.

Too true and now we to must export this mock democracy to the Middle East.

Democracy begins at home, and democracy "Canadian style" needs a tune up, before embarking on a world tour.
