Granatstein Vs Layton: Letter To The Editor

Posted on Wednesday, January 28 at 22:20 by whelan costen
Canadians didn’t support the invasion of Iraq, because there was no threat to North America from Iraq, the intelligence reports are leaking every day to remind Canadians, we were right to stay out of that conflict. Had it been a legitimate war, the United Nations would have given their blessing to the invasion. They did not. The war has by all news reports escalated violence in the world, not brought freedom and peace. The BMD program is a very frightening dream, as yet no one has stated that the plan would in any way protect North America from attacks. Why would Canada want to indulge in this fantasy, which will only encourage the world to increase their weapons programs, to defend against a pre-emptive strike? This country has many issues, truly Canadian issues, to address; such as hunger, poverty, medical needs, social programs to support, protection our natural resources from depletion and our census information from becoming public knowledge. There is far more to protecting a country from perceived enemies than just arming it to the teeth! If Mr. Granatstein is trying to defend the BMD, he ought to provide Canadians with some hard data. Canadians don’t just accept the media spin anymore, as in the Free Trade deals, no we are more aware now and want to know the real impact of these decisions before we sign anything, including the ballot. If Mr. Granatstein is trying to convince me, he will have to find other examples of anti-Americanism, than those he cited, such as Paul Hellyer, Jack Layton, Lloyd Axworthy and the others mentioned, who from my assessment are the best examples we have today of Pro-Canadians, working to protect this country from becoming nothing more than a ‘yesman’ to another country‘s idealism! Standing up for a sovereign Canada is just plain old fashioned patriotism, not anti- anything! C.Whelan Costen

Thanks for posting this Susan, and Kevin I\'ll let you know if the National Post prints it.

I sent a copy to Jack Layton, Paul Hellyer and Mel Hurtig, so far the response has been positive.

This reporter (?) is just another right-winger who likes all the other brain-dead right wingers in the political parties in this country.

Tune him out, he\'s full of hot air.

He probably doesn\'t even know he\'s a little right of centre. Just a little.

    Oh say can you see...

    Whelan,

Thanks for taking my challenge. It really did have allot more to do with the issue of the anti-american label. Although Jack Layton was on the recieving end, its the anti-american label that gets under my skin.

Will be nice to see it get published, wouldn\'t it.

Thanks for the comments. Note J.L. Granatstein, is not a reporter, he was a part of our military and now is part of the critique party. I wonder if he had any comments while he was serving. His stance seems to be that we as in Canadians, are nothing without the U.S.; I for one totally disagree. But the most disgusting part of his article to me, was that he did not make any argument other than to criticize and tear down patriotic individuals.

It reminds me of people that attack someone else to try to make themselves look bigger; it always fails. If he wants to dispute the importance of BMD, then state the reasons for the program, don\'t attack the people, who are stating the points against the program. I hate arguments with no substance!

ok now I feel really stupid, it looks like a letter in defence of Jack has been accepted, but you have to subscribe to the National post to read it; so if anyone out there can access it, let me know if they printed this letter, or perhaps someone else also wrote to them on this issue. I\'m not sure I want to subscribe to the National Post? Either way, they printed someone\'s objection to the article, and that is good.
