Alberta Water Plan... Sale Of Water Rights

Posted on Thursday, November 27 at 22:28 by whelan costen
Environment Minister Lorne Taylor said the long-awaited provincial water strategy aims to curb water use by 30 per cent over the next 10 years through education and partnering with industry to eliminate waste.

"This is incredibly important for our province," Taylor said after releasing the strategy. "It's incredibly important for all of us . . . I believe water is the issue of the century."

"There's no other jurisdiction in Canada that's trying to do this broad water strategy that we're trying to do."

Taylor said the strategy, which allows the sale of water rights and could lead to charging people for water, will be controversial but he believes Albertans will back it. Currently people are charged for the infrastructure and delivery of water, but not the water itself.

Any time we can cut down on the wasting of water is a good thing. But I have to agree, that perhaps this is likely another farce. Will oil companies get unlimited access to water reserves(like they do now), perhaps maybe paying an unproportional (minimal) share for it, based on buying by bulk, while the public pays through the nose? Given that this is again a province trying to wrestle yet more control from the feds, will the province(s) then move to selling water to other countries and corporations? If people have to pay for the water itself, which is a resource, then who exactly owns this resource? I like to think that ALL of us own it! But given provincial (and increasingly, federal) track records on allotting resource ownership to corporate interests, this scheme leaves me suspecting yet again that something sinister is afoot!

I too believe this is not exactly about water conservation, yes conservation is good, wasting anything is not good but I suspect that people will be sucked into the plan by paying a small amount now and then look out! The farmers will not be able to afford the water, there goes agriculture in this country, but oil...well there will always be money for oil, and while oil is important there are other forms of fuel, but nothing replaces water. So the fountains flowing in U.S. deserts might be a good place to stop the wastage, but to say that average people will pay for water is an abomination, caused by mismanagement and the greed of oil companies, and corporation that refuse to respect the enviroment. So many of the clean water sources are being polluted without anyone blinking, but it\'s easier to just pay for more rather than pay to clean up the mess! The price will keep going up and the government coffers will overflow and the one with the most money will get the water, but the reality is we can\'t drink money!

Did you read the article?<p> <p>"David Pryce, of the Canadian Petroleum Association, noted that water- assisted oil production contributed $700 million to the provincial economy in 2001 and <b>said the industry should be treated the same as other water users."</b><p> <i>but to say that average people will pay for water is an abomination</i><p> I see your point, I get monthly bills for electricity, natural gas, water, sewer, snow removal, . . . water!?! Why those bastiches! Why should I, the average person, have to pay for goods and services that I use? Next they'll have me paying for air and sunshine, if they can figure a way to meter it! I should get my electricity for free, after all, it comes from water!<p> Get a grip Chicken Little.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain

C`mon. You know that if they could make you pay for using the sun they would! Just wait until space travel gets to such a point where some large multi-national actually purchases the sun! Sounds silly, but in this world, it`s not! Greed has no limits! And with the increasing amount of air pollution, who`ll get the contract to sell the oxygen tanks? Far fetched? I wish it was.

And there are likely other capitalist lifeforms out there, competing to buy as many suns as they can, resulting in an inter-galactic war over resources!

The reality is that we are already paying for water, what I object to is that it will become the person who has the ability to pay the highest dollar, that will get the water! So little chicken little will go thirsty and die, so whatever as long as the corporations have the water they need, the world will continue to turn. Not bloody likely, there will be a revolution for sure!

We have much water in Canada, and the U.S. is trying to get us to sell it to them (I say give it to them).

They now have in NAFTA an agreement that stops us from selling it to them at little profit.

Just look at the agreement to sell them our oil and natural gas, we cannot charge more to them than we charge to Canadians. Where did we lose control ?

NAFTA, an international FREE INVESTMENT agreement. It\'s not about trade, it\'s about investment, and buying up all of our major companies. Of course, this is not to benefit Canada, it is corporate policy. Foreign and American.

We have to stop this insanity.

Since the Liberals and the Alliance/Tories are on the same side, what are we to do ?

    I ask you ??
