Even if we chose some other path, like correcting the men of empire through using their own courts, would we ever be satisifed with being ruled by those who demand we submit to their will and dictates? Which they don't even apply to themselves?
Eventually we would be confronted with the need to be Sovereign. This is an essential act, no matter how we are to proceed with what all people are calling for.
Now being Sovereign has nothing to do with what the Queen, or American government suggests Sovereignty is, for them or us. At no time does it mean you are not accountable for your actions, and it certainly does not mean you are subjects of a government that tells you you're sovereign, while you are restricted to the laws and ways defined by that government.
Being Sovereign, means being a part of a Community-Nation of People, who act responsibly, who make sure no one goes without, and that peace and justice is always maintained in a way that mutually benefits the whole. It is also a way of conduct, relationships, and responsibility to each other.
Generations of oppression, assimilation and forced poverty, have resulted in us forgetting this, and us falling into the trappings of a colonial ruse. And now most peoples of the world do not have the knowledge or resources to resolve their problems as they require, nor provide the example we're all now waiting for; that also enables all the madness to be done.
With Love and Respect to All Indigenous Peoples of the World, and despite our own history of subjugation, we do have that knowledge (awareness) and resources (will and ability) to provide the example and bring resolution.
This example is much like what the Great Law of the Haudenosaunee does. The Great Law is not a rule-book like modern law is. It is a means of action that enables us to act as any situation requires.
I don't say this to suggest that we assume the role of solving everyone else's problems, or force others to do as we; what this means is, we just do what we need to bring real resolution.
At that time, All Our Relations will instantly see our actions for what they are, and would embrace everything that works for them.
There are no such examples today, with the exception of the actions of our Southern Relations: the Zapatista, Via Campesina, and the Landless Workers Movement. Otherwise, the only examples are of getting a land claim that really further contorts Federally-confirmed Sovereignty, and of laws that seem to work in our favour yet end up working against us because there's one line that reduces a Nation to having nothing more than the authority of a municipality.
There is nothing substantial today that gives us the means for all of us to be done with all of it,
short of taking another 500 years of reaction, trying and failure, only to realize the inevitable; what our Ancestors tried to enable for us.
If we don't realize our Sovereignty, or proceed differently, then the best we can hope for is what we have already had; and that means we will all continue to needlessly suffer, isolated, on the common path of the people--- the one of death.
Better is the path of the Real People. To see that path, consider the matters of treaties, land rights, the trusts, residential schools, genocide, assimilation - and how most indigenous Nations are proceeding to address these matters.
If there are some that haven't given up altogether, we are proceeding by taking it to the colonial courts of canada and america:
This has never really worked for us. We've never got justice or it's corporate equal (money), and when we have, the matter is isolated and divided from everything else. Residential School cases are dealt with as if they are "anonamolous occurrences", only a couple here and there... and yet we're talking about over 50,000 children here of our direct relations... and then consider the numbers of pedophile priests who molest "their own people..." that's an easy estimate of 1,000,000 children killed, raped, and terrorized over the last hundred years, world wide. Is going into the Colonial Courts enough?
As for genocide, we can't even get them to admit it happened, or dish out some apology, nevermind have them take responsiblity for this terrorism against us.
Besides, we're not even supposed to set foot in these colonial courts, as our Nations agreed to with the Queen before Canada and America Existed, an agreement, that still applies today.
The same goes for all the Land Claims and the Trusts in Canada and America, equalling over 500 Billion Dollars. We may get a ruling in our favour, but because our Nations are divided in States and Provinces, the whole do not benefit from any ruling; and our divisions are maintained.
There are only two ways to have these matters properly addressed, and justice brought: It is either brought to the International Community (the ICJ); or, we bring Justice ourselves (to be discussed in part 2).
As for going international, all previous attempts in bringing any of these issues to the UN, the ICJ and the international community of governments has resulted in us being ignored, and it is clear that the best they can do for us is create studies and documents that recommend these colonial governments "take better care of their indigenous people."
The United Nations would need to be used as a forum to address these matters; but not like the world forum on indigenous issues. Rather that three representatives from Every Indigenous Nation in the world are sent to the UN to address these matters, and they stay until they are addressed. And since all colonial govenrments are responsible for our poverty, landlessness, loss of language, history, customs and heritage: they have to pay the bill for all of us to be sent. We could tell them: "this is step one on your Healing Path."
If necessary, we could even write them a letter, saying, "not giving us the money we need to travel and unite to address these matters is a voluntary admission of committing said crimes against the people and is a voluntary forfeit of All authorities within the Jurisdictions on the land of Our Sovereign Nations."
Personally I prefer the option of bringing justice ourselves, since Becoming Sovereign And announcing our Sovereignty while publicly rescinding all policies and procedures that do not serve us: is inevitable, no matter the path we walk here.
And since it is clear by the failure of resolution from all colonial-based governments, corporations and international institutions that it is literally up to us to bring our justice, make our peace, and enable our freedom. There is no one else. We are the ones we've been waiting for.

Every time you complain about the moderators, god kills a kitten.
If you solve the problems,ie LAND CLAIMS,ya gotta give something up.
I understand what you mean Anon, about giving something up to bring resolution to, as you mentioned for instance, land claims.

(...forgive me for writing like a bulldozer here, my brain is moving so fast I can't keep up...)

The thing is, at least in my mind, we have already given something up, and it is something all disenfranchised people know: We've given everything.. so much that the only thing we have now to give, is the will to work together for the common needs of the People.. needs that are determined and defined "by All the People."

Respectfully, and as John Stewart
That's why fundamental paricipatory inclusion has become necessary for the indigenous here and elswehere, in all governments around the world... we're not just talking about justice here anymore, because justice isn't enough if it doesn't bring lasting change.

And considering the whole of what's been done to the people, and the present path of governments and corporations alike, that every indigenous people of the world are currently enslaved by systems that have no jurisdictions on the land they are sitting on; systems and governments that do not even act in the best interests of their own citizens... I think this is more than reasonable, and supportable by all people regardless of race, class, gender, or belief. Especially once they understand what they're going to be getting, unless we change course.

I mean, deep integration? These funny beans are going ahead with erasing their own jurisdictions, laws, citizens and governments, and replacing it with "the moot world order" (an upcoming article
And you are certainly right, Canadian citizens would rather talk BS than anything we're talking about here... and that's ok, because the talk of deep integration and all the legal propaganda text (FTAA/NATFA/MAI/CAFTA/GATT/etc.) is going to continue, and the needs of the people are going to continue increasingly needing fullfillment, and the governments are going to continue failing with their "more is less, we are the best of the worse" campaign of triumph and magnificence... and the indigenous of the world are going to continue preparing to fullfill our duties as being the people of the land who act in the best interests of the whole, for the greater good of all things...

It's all going to work out as we need it to (not necessarily as we want)! All we need now is to be able to communicate and work together.
