Well doesn`t that say it all? The guy has no inkling of a vision in his own head for the country. Not that we couldn`t see it before, though. People like Mr.Sweatship make me ill!

    What a humiliating story.

Liberals have been implementing policies that grind down or eviscerate every Canadian institution for the past forty years - and now they go overseas to try and buy a vision?!!

What a pathetic bunch of losers, especially people who voted for mealy-mouthed Liberal tripe.

Yes, quite pathetic. But I wouldn`t say that this liberal trend has been for the last 40 years. I`d say this sellout trend has been since 1984. Mulroney, Chretien, now Martin- all traitors!

Funny it happened big time in 1984--how prophetic.....and he outsourced the contract to a global elitist, former U of T prof. Lovely.

Sorry, I don't see "sellout" in this one at all. I see a Canadian leader floundering, trying to do too many things at once and losing the big picture. So he turns to a Canadian academic at Oxford. So what? She's an expert in her field, she's written extensively about Canada, and she's got a real vision for what the country can do and be. This is exactly the person politicians should be turning to for advice. Politicians know one thing and one thing only: how to get elected. Running a country is an entirely different set of skills, and creating a coherent national vision is yet another. I think it's rather brave and honest of a floundering politician to admit it and seek good advice.

And yes, she went to Oxford because Canadian schools don't seek to attract the best minds in the world. It costs a lot to attract the best minds in the world, and Canadians simply aren't willing to pay -- don't blame her for leaving. U of T is the closest we've got to an "excellent" school, but they hold a firm belief that Canadians are second-rate and hire primarily foreigners.

Pierre Trudeau was the beginning of the end of Canada's institutions and constitution, he hated the people of Canada and his legacy proves it.

canadians have such a long way to go to get out of the tiresome racist self-righteous rants. they offer nothing positive, bring nothing to their own table for civil discourse. i used to feel sorry for racist self-righteous us-obsessed anti-american canadian bigots. not anymore. no one should ever discourse with or acknolwedge histronic attack-monkeys who rant and rave like lunatics in an asylum. couldn't be all those legalized drugs, prostitution, organized crime, government supported suicide. it's all so ironic. canada has become it's own phoney reality show. i hope you get cancelled.

agreed. this shows martin has a degree of humility that is all too lacking is our politcians. It seems people are never happy with their elected officials. They could s__t gold nuggets for us and we would complain they're too small. public service is a brutal profession, i'd like to see all the whiners get things done in ottawa. of course that wouldn't happen because it's far easier to b___h from the sidelines.

    Gorian,
I tend to agree with you on this. Most politicians don't seem to come with the capacity to see beyond thier next election date. I would prefer they go to academics rather than the johnny-on-the-thought people. The only thing I disagree with her on, (in this article, as I have not read her book), is that we need to sign on to Missile Defence. By doing that again we give up any opportunity we may have to LEAD the way on security, CANADIAN SECURITY. But I totally agree with her that we do not have to compare ourselves to anyone, just be who we are and do the right thing for Canada and Canadians. I've asked Martin to do just that in emails so we'll see if he listens to anyone with that opinion.

I would add that those that are claiming we are leaders in law and peacekeeping still think of us as the Canada that still had its own integity. I too was mortified at how many ignorant people were crying that the little Bush man forgot to mention us after 9/11. WHO THE *f* CARES? Approval by the Celluccis and Bushes of the world only confirms we are on the WRONG path.

Martin is PATHETIC. His lack of vision is disturbing especially since he's running our country. Why doesn't Martin ask the citizens of Canada for their opinion for what Canada should be as a country and in the world. Right now, however, Canada is somewhat in the dark.

Martin is already rich, so he doesn't have the drive Jean Chretien had to become rich and spread it around his town and his friends.

It's like he knows that it's good to be King, he just doesn't know why...

  13. Wed Feb 09, 2005 9:50 pm
Why would you say that about Trudeau, anon? Is it possible he was simply from a different era?

  14. Wed Feb 09, 2005 11:33 pm
No, no, no, anon, above, a prime Minister should have a vision for his or her country! If Martin can`t multi-task, like so many of his predeccesors, then he has no business being PM! And Canada does indeed have some of the best minds, its just that people who go to places like Oxford are prestige seekers. University of Toronto, McGill, Alberta, are second to none.
