What Are We Doing In Afghanistan ???

Posted on Sunday, February 05 at 12:43 by Eleanor
Recently a number of Canadian military personnel have been killed or wounded. The more people Canada posts in Afghanistan, the more casualities our forces will experience; and not only the families of fallen soliders will suffer, but the entire country as well. So why are Canadians in Afghanistan? The simplest answer is something like this: Canada is a member of NATO, which means it is obliged to help other NATO members (in this case the Americans) in their military missions overseas. Unfortunately, that obligation prevails, no matter how misguided our allies' missions might be. Afghanistan poses no threat whatsoever to Canada's security. Zero, zilch, nada. And to those who naively think that Canada's military is there to help the poor Afghanis, Canada spends more than $600 million annually on its military operations (so far), and committed only $200 million to help Afghanis (not known how much was spent if any). Canadians have traditionally been proud that their country has often been the first to work under the UN peacekeeping banner in many hotspots around the globe. But Canada's involvement in Afghanistan is not, and has never been, peacekeeping. Canada joined the Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) coalition in 2001 "in order to destroy the Taliban shield that was protecting Al Qaeda's infrastructure in Afghanistan." And then, Canadians were being killed by American "friendly fire." OEF underwent a name change to the International Security Assistance Force, whose mandate was to protect the Afghani interim government from its "enemies," but it was essentially the same old operation. Canada contributed to both OEF and ISAF. http://www.canadianislamiccongress.com/fb/friday_bulletin.php?fbdate=2006-02-03#1

Unfortunatly it is the Americans who are calling the shots in NATO. Canada has either to withdraw from NATO or the Americans do. Neither likely. Canada has no say in the manner. Even on this blog, many are saying Canada has to take a larger role. It's not a yes or no position. NATO was once considered a "peace" organization. It's now just back support for the Americans.

    >NATO was once considered a "peace" organization. <

It was never about peace. It was about mutual defense. The question now is; do we dismantle is, or use it to do what the UN is incapable of. The UN was supposed to be about "peace".

Unfortunately there is no mutual defence it's mutual protection for the US interests around the globe. The other UN or NATO countries seem to stand around trying to catch any of the money that falls out of the already overflowing corporate warriors pockets. The UN and NATO are both obviously useless because these two wars went ahead because the US wanted them to.

The memberships in the UN do not allow for the other members to for instance sanction the US which I believe it should have been over these wars. I agree with Dr. Elmasry stating that NATO obviously obligates us to participate in wars of agression that are not in our best interest. It seems the rest of the world will not take a stand against what I consider to be the biggest terrorist on the planet.

Canada needs to be in a position of building up our military for "our" security purposes, make independent foreign policy and do more one-on-one with countries that ask for our assistance.

Once you are dealing with an empire we have very few options to make our own decisions.

It's the members that made it that way. The back room is busier then what the world see's up front. Canada no less guilty. Nothing is shown that these members don't want us to see. The USA has money and the world is filled with the greedy. United Nations, North Alantic Treaty Organisation and even the Common Wealth has no purpose other then a boy's club where only the elite are invited. There is no certain forcast for peace, with these "clubs" calling the shots. Pearson would roll over in his grave if he seen his hard work end in dollar and cents. This is the Globalisation with no "peace" in mind.

Afghanistan is one of the very few places in the world that Canada, Nato or the USA should be. Iraq however isn't. There aren't many better places in the world that we can make a better positive influence. We are still peacekeeping and still doing this for benefit of the Afghanistan people, jsut taking a more active role.

I work in the army reserves, have asked questions to Generals and Colonels and talked to many people I work with that have gone overseas. We are doing what is right over there.

And we havn't had a serious homeland threat for a very long time, and good to see that for the first time in many, many years we are setting up homeland defences in each province.

The military is an important part of Canada. Through WW2 up until the Cold War Canada had the highest amount of people in it's military per capita in the world. With no wars or threats to us we let that amount shrink to over half. Now the military is fially growing again and the whole country is benefiting.

All of these articles about "what Canada is doing in Afghanistan" never spend more then a sentence describing why we are over there and what we are actually doing and for what reasons.

If we were to leave afghanistan what would happen to its people?

Canada is one of the few countries out there acting on good morals to help people. We are helping to give these people a fraction of the freedom we enjoy. Nobody has the right to say we shouldnt do that.

    sdf1234,

Saying no one has the right to say we should not be in Afghanistan makes what you say you are doing in Afghanistan irrelevant to us who are paying for the war. What do you want Canada to become a military industrial complex like the USofA? A policed state? A country run by the military? Why would anyone want to spend their hard earned money on such a world? Why not spend it on peace?

Some Conservatives resent having to spend their hard earned dollars to support the CBC. A PUBLIC BROADCASTER well I resent spending one penny on murder and bombs and tanks and guns and bullets. And because I am being forced to do that with NO debate from the bastards running the show I have EVERY RIGHT TO SAY GET OUT!
