Broken Promises For Orchard McKay Deal

Orchard was silent Thursday in the wake of a proposal by MacKay and Alliance Leader Stephen Harper to merge their parties. He was en route from his Saskatchewan farm to Ottawa, where he was expected to deliver much the same message as Repo at a news conference scheduled for Friday morning.

MacKay paved the way to victory at the Conservative leadership convention in May by signing a hastily drafted agreement with third-place Orchard that included, among other things, a pledge not to merge with the Alliance.

It was the key to winning the delegate support MacKay needed to put himself over the top against second-place Jim Prentice, a veteran Tory backroomer from Calgary.

MacKay had some trouble explaining his change of heart Thursday.
