Completing The Cycle Of Usefulness: Harper Doing His Master's Bidding

Posted on Wednesday, May 10 at 09:52 by Lex
Naturally, Stephen Harper is not always miffed at the media, it has proven useful to his [sic] cause for the most part. As Canada's little remarked overhaul of the Canadian Forces under the vacated Liberal government of Paul Martin, the media silence serves still to further Harper's American dream of Canada's [sic] global muscularity, military conquest, and perhaps one day he being referred to as the "Wartime P.M." As the plan lain out by his Liberal predecessors began to bear its terrible fruit, Canada's [sic] media, led by State television's flagship news program, The National, rushed the breach, inundating the airwaves with tales of the good-hearted intent of our [sic] armed actors sent to Afghanistan. Peter Mansbridge went so far as to obscure the facts of history, reminding Canadians the invasions and occupations of both Afghanistan and Iraq were due to the 9/11 attacks in America. An extra bit of disingenuousness on Pete's part, no doubt to ensure the continuance of his six-figure salary. http://www.pej.org/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=4634&mode=thread&order=0&thold=0 [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on May 11, 2006]

    Poor Chris Cook. Apparently, he pines to see our war dead in their caskets and is unable to console himself with the fact that the media were barred from attending the repatriation ceremony directly (although they were present at Kandahar for the send off, and had full view from the fence line and were present to see the grief of the families at the funerals themselves). So to sate his perverse appetite, here are the links with the grim pictures you need to prove that his arguement is fallacy:<br />
    <br />
    The caskets at Kandahar<br />

    The caskets arrival at Trenton<br />

    So it seems we have the pictures of the caskets leaving, arriving and even at the funerals. So much for a media being barred from taking the pictures (they were only barred from direct contact with the families at the return home). So much for that arguement - lie #1 dead.<br />
    <br />
    But it seems that is not the only issue that Mr. Cook has... for he continues: "Little mention in the media though, that the majority in Canada opposed "The Mission" when it was strictly an American show; opposed it when the U.N. relented, granting the patently illegal retribution bombing campaign a patina-thin imprimatur..."<br />
    <br />
    Chris seems to be forgetting that the invasion of Afghanistan had overwhelming public support initially. It was only after the invasion of Iraq that this support began to waver - no small part because the Americans put up false evidence to support that attack. That's lie #2 put down.<br />
    <br />
    Insofar as the "illegality" of the invasion of Afghanistan goes, that invasion had the full support of the UN security council (Iraq did not) and was backed up by no less than 5 UN sanctions - numbers 1368, 1383, 1378, and 1386 (links below).<br />

    <br />
    Maybe Chris knows something about international law that I don't, but I hardly think he knows more than Kofi Annan who specifically called the Iraq invasion illegal but pointedly separated that from Afghanistan. Oops, that arguement is also crap. Lie #3 down and out. <br />
    <br />
    Thus, when all his other arguments are exhausted, Mr. Cook gives way to tired mantra of the far left and exclaims repeatedly "Harper is Bush's lapdog!" (my words, but his intent). When all else fails, link Harper to Bush. Apparently Chris didn't follow the past election where this tactic failed miserably for the Liberals. I can't wait for the next election. Will his obvious distaste for the Conservatives become even more visceral if the Tory's win an outright majority? What filth and lies will spew forth from his column then? <br />
    <br />
    Well, small hope, since it looks like the Bloc is prepped to buttress Harper's Tories for at least the short term. Should be enough to get us past the Liberal leadership race.
