Big Win For The Little Guys -Wal-Mart Workers Get Union

Posted on Tuesday, August 03 at 14:09 by whelan costen
There are no unionized Wal-Mart stores, although a handful of meat workers at a Wal-Mart Super center in Texas have joined the United Food And Commercial Workers. (AP/Mike Wintroath) SAGUENAY, Que. (CP) - A Wal-Mart store in this city may become the first such outlet to be unionized after the Quebec Labour Relations Board accredited a union there to represent workers at the retail giant. The Quebec Federation of Labour announced the accreditation on Monday. The store has about 180 employees in this city 200 kilometres north of Quebec City. "The union represents the large majority of the store's employees," said Marie-Josee Lemieux, president of the union local with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). "We hope that Wal-Mart will accept this decision and negotiate a labour contract with the union." http://www.mytelus.com/news/article.do?pageID=canada_home&articleID=1677602

You mean, "A Big Win for the Union", right? The little guys will just be a little further down the totem pole. (I have no love for the UFCW, been there - done that - bought the t-shirt - haven't worn it out yet.)<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />

I personnally never had a love story with unions either but have always admitted that in certain instances , they have their place if only to hold back overly greedy corporations. Walmart fits the profile. So good job to the workers <p>...and Québec leads the way once again.</p>

About time a greedy corporation is forced to treat it's slaves... I mean "associates" fairly. Great job to the Union and employees to finally make Wal Mart a respectable place to work.

I do agree with Dr. Caleb though, it's not the best Union, but hey, it's better than no union at all.

Yes, when unions actually care about their members and the community, the results are good. And yes, Wal-Mart needs to be forced into treating it`s workers much better than they do! Billion dollar corporations, as well as multi-million dollar corporations, must be FORCED to share their wealth with the people that generate their wealth for them- the so-called little guys!!!

According to the news last night, it's not a done deal, and someone from walmart said they will close stores if their profits decline.

If the workers get a decent wage and benefits, their profits will decline.

BTW, it was mentioned that a full time worker gets 30 hours a week, and part time get less than 20.

Some full time job on low wages.

I spent four years as chair of a Union during the '80s but I would be the first to agree that Unions lost their idealism many years before that. If they really gave a crap about social justice, they would stop inflating the price of automobiles, for example, and get their rear-ends overseas where they could help organize the poor slaves of the Philippines or Bangladesh or wherever else we Westerners keep our sweat shops.

Having said that, though, I still support the right of workers to organize and to negotiate the terms of employment. But if history repeats itself, Wal-Mart will appeal and, if unsuccessful, they will refuse to negotiate. Then when the QFL orders them to negotiate, they will close the store. That's the Wal-Mart way and there is nothing that will persuade them to allow this Union to get a foothold.

Sorry to disappoint the Wal-Mart vassals in Saguenay, but their jobs are history. Wal-Mart is a pox upon the planet.

No, actually a spokeman (fellow by the name of Pelltier) from Wal-Mart stated emphatically that the only reason a Wal-Mart would ever close would be for 'economic reasons' not because a union was formed. Whether Wal-Mart would keep its word is another matter. Of course, economic reasons could very well encompass a union situation. Sneaky Wal-Mart...they know what they're doing.

Do you write down every word of every news program ?

You have the facts straight, but we really are talking about the same thing.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

Well Paul if you are right and this comes to pass, maybe just maybe people will start to see what the corporate power is all about. I realize unions have lost their true motivation in many cases, but it wouldn't happen if workers were paid fairly and treated fairly! I used to work for a guy who closed Monday's just so he would never have to pay holiday pay, as most holidays happen on Monday, he was really peeved at having to pay for Christmas Day...maximize the profits and screw the loyal worker whenever possible! That is the attitude that is killing people.
