US Losing Jobs Big Time

Posted on Tuesday, January 06 at 23:00 by Jim Callaghan
Maytag is closing it's plant in the US where the workers are paid some $15 an hour, and opening in Mexico where they pay less than $1 an hour. Every night I watch just to see which companies are heading overseas. The list is Very Long !! They have lost over 3 million jobs over the last 3 years. ******************** Next, are you ready for this, it will be in tomorrow's news. Bushy-Bush has decided to allow all 10 to 12 Million illegal aliens that are currently working or whatever in the US something like an amnesty. He doesn't call it that, he calls it more like job matching (what kind of language is this ?) so that the employers can hire the workers at low wages, and eventually they will become US citizens. Of course, this will drive down the average wage in the country. Does Bush seem to care ? Nope. If he sent them all home, then maybe they would have jobs for the Real Americans. What lopsided logic ! So much for border security. Fingerprints at the Canadian border, and a free pass if they can run fast enough at the Mexican border. Even the border guards are confused. Really ?? Why is that ?? The Mexicans that came to the US legally are pissed. Bush has a lot of his own people against this whole idea, but let's just see how that shakes out. He's only doing this to gain more Hispanic votes. My point is that it seems the US is deliberately trying to wipe out the middle class, and what will be left ? Poverty and wealth. Who's going to pay the taxes ? What the hell are they thinking (or smoking) down there ? Even Stiglitz, a Nobel Laureate in Economics says NAFTA isn't working properly. Hello !! This guy is in favour of Free Trade, but it has to be Fair trade as well. At least that makes sense. He also thinks it is unfair to Mexico. That comment threw Lou right off the rails !! I think the US is going to be in trouble in the next few years, and they just may take us with them, their policies are soooo out to lunch. And I thought things were bad in Canada. I can hardly wait to see them implode, as long as we keep our heads down.

Here's a link to the story on the amnesty for "illegal" immigrants to the US so you can get the background of what Jim's talking about:
Bush is ready to let millions of illegal immigrants stay in the U.S..
I think if this truly means an amnesty for all of the people working in the US "illegally" then I think that's a positive thing. Giving them legal status and all the benefits others get, like minimum wage, sounds like it would mean less abuse of the millions of illegal immigrants in the US (such as recently uncovered actions of Walmart, which was illegally importing workers and using them as slave labour--no breaks, no holidays, etc etc). And I don't support anti-immigrant policies and groups who view this as a "threat to American workers".
I am concerned, however, that some advocacy groups are saying that what this policy really means is that those who apply for green cards and don't get them are more likely to be deported. I'm also wondering about the as-yet-unspecified fee for the program (is it going to be so expensive that it makes it impossible for people to take advantage of it?) and the caveat that people can apply for guest worker status "provided there was no American to take the job"--could be tricky with jobs as apparently hard to come by as they are in the US, could also be anti-immigrant.
I suppose it'll just take time to see what the practical implications of the policy really are, but here's hoping...

Much of his move around the illegals being allowed in to work is to placate Mexico and make them open to more American advances.

If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.

I\'m not sure that the aim of this move is to allow the workers to work for minimum wage, as I understand it, they will allow the employers to pay even lower wages.

This is also another move by Bush to increase his chances of being re-elected, as I think he got something like 35% of the Hispanic vote last time.

I don\'t look at it as a positive in any way.

He\'s also looking at enlarging the military. The poor make good recruits. I can\'t remember where I read this now but the article was talking about Mexicans that joined the military and went to Iraq would be given US citizenship on their return. I also believe we\'ll all be treated to his electable I\'m Mr. Nice Guy routine until Nov. 2nd. Pitiful.

As much as we slam the US power team here on this site, we have to feel for the average American citizen who are seeing the loss of their country too. I mean, we correctly perceive this evil plan before us as US imperialism because the the US market is the most lucrative on the planet, and this corporate fascist plan puts the market and profits before all else! Obviously, the millionaires and billionaires in the US see nothing wrong with this sinister plan ( neither do millionaire and billionaire Canadians, who are more than happy to sell out and play along) but the average American citizen is suffering from an assault on their way of life too! And of course, the already impoverished American is becoming poorer!

The American middle class is disappearing into the working poor.

We are in the same boat, but they are hurting Big Time, and it\'s only going to get worse.
