Insurance Profits In Alberta Spark Debate

Posted on Tuesday, March 16 at 23:00 by whelan costen
Last fall, when the Klein government was discussing insurance reforms to lower premiums for the province's drivers, the insurance industry complained that their margins on auto policies were already too slim.

The government is looking at a number of changes it says will lead to reduced premiums for 80 per cent of Alberta drivers.

Premier Ralph Klein said consumers are also already getting a break because of the rate freeze that was imposed last October, and that there's nothing wrong with companies making profits.

He also pointed out that the $2.63 billion profit included public insurance companies, which both the Liberals and NDP believe should be put in place in Alberta.

This makes me SO MAD. My insurance costs more than my actual car (a used 2001 cavalier we bought last year). The caps didn't reduce the ridiculous rates--they just kept them from going any higher. No WONDER they made profits like this.

The lesson, kids: privatized insurance is BAD. Some days I wish I lived in Manitoba...

Agreed Susan, but until we get rid of the chapter 11 clause, we won't see any changes!

We have to abrogate NAFTA to get rid of chapter 11.

    There is no other way.

I can sympathize. My insurance isn't nearly that bad, but it did go down from last year. Six whole freaking dollars. $994 a year for a 12 year old car I paid $8000 for, and $1006 for a brand new $60,000 car. Where do they get these rates from? Do they make them up on the spot?<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />

The problem is that the government makes it mandatory for us to carry insurance, then privatizes the industry which leaves us at the mercy of profit hungry corporations and shareholders who proceed to screw us up the wazoo. Between the two entities they are getting their cake and eating it too. The government stepping in and putting a freeze on premiums is useless. The entire industry needs a major overhaul. If the insurance industry is to remain privatized, then the government has no business stepping in making it mandatory to carry insurance (vehicle). In this case as a consumer it should be our decision. The alternative is to have mandatory insurance run and regulated by the government. The way the system is now, I feel like I am being blackmailed.

The insurance for a 1999 Malibu we bought used last June was $1,062. and it went up only $3.00 to $1,065. ?????? Sooooo, I have the same question. There seems to be no logic to any of this anymore. I have a call in to our ins. broker and am still waiting for a response.</p> <p>Hhhmmm, you are paying $1006. for a $60,000 *new* car and we are paying $1065. for a used 1999 Malibu that cost $12,000.????? Something doesn't sound right here.</p>

    I'm4Canada,

You are being blackmailed. I'm not looking forward to our house insurance bill this August because of the forest fires last year in the interior of B.C. some insurance companies were refusing to insure people. Yet, I can't have a mortgage without insurance. This insurance business is an organized crime ring.

Someone should start up an insurance co-op.

Do you have any tickets in the last 5 years? I don't. If you don't, there is yet another nugget of illogic.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />

<p>No, our records are clean so that doesn't explain it. Our broker called this morning and said she was very surprised that our premiums only went up $53.00. She also said that most of the policy renewals she is seeing are increasing by several hundred dollars at least.</p> <p>One of the reasons she is so surprised by all this is that they were expecting to see decreases across the board which were promised by the government once the temporary freeze was lifted. Instead the government has once again approved increases of up to 28%. She said this marks the 3rd such increase the government has approved in the last 12 months.</p> <p>So to me, this is just further proof that the government will say whatever is required to appease us then turns around and does the complete opposite.</p> <p>I have used the word blackmail in numerous conversations with our broker over the years but today was the first time she actually used it when telling me how the insurance companies themselves are basically blackmailing the brokers with all the rules, regulations and restrictions they are imposing now. They are enforcing such unrealistic requirements that a lot of brokers are having large sectors of their business (clients) being rejected or outright denied.</p> <p>If a broker cannot retain enough business then they have their licence revoked. My conversations with her are always an eye-opener and always thoroughly depressing.</p>

They did, they are called the Co-Operators, and they are raping you just as badly as any one of those private bastages. In fact, their rates are generally higher than most.
