N.L. Oil Industry Backs Williams Over Hibernia South

Posted on Saturday, January 20 at 10:01 by RPW
"He doesn't seem to be able to make a deal with anybody," said Reid, noting that Newfoundland and Labrador's population continues to decline. "While that is occurring, we're having an exodus from this province, the likes of which we've never seen before." http://www.cbc.ca/canada/newfoundland-labrador/story/2007/01/18/hibernia-noia.html Commentary: Liberal Opposition Leader Reid is not making any sense in his statements. Granted, an opposition is supposed to oppose. But please gentlemen, let us have some sort of rational opposition, if you please! Newfoundland is hemorrhaging workers because of Fort Mac in Alberta. Danny Williams wants to ensure that the oil off Newfoundland's shores is used to keep Newfoundlanders at home. The oil companies apparently are not willing to sign on to any kind of guarantee that would do this. Ergo, no deal. How could Gerry Reid oppose this? He should be solidly on side, shoulder-to-shoulder and toe-to-toe, in the interest of Newfoundland's citizenry. Were that our Conservative PM Harper had the fortitude of Conservative Premier Williams! [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on January 22, 2007]

What many people do not understand is that there are many ideological Liberals who see things from the perspective of private industry rather than public interest.

Williams tends to be a traditional conservative rather than a neo-conservative who puts the needs of his province before the wants of individual private interests. The new conservatives, like ideological liberals, put the wants of the private industry before the needs of the community.

We ran into a problem with an ideological liberal premier here in Nova Scotia where he signed away most of the benefits of gas development to the private sector. We also had a neo-conservative premier who privatized our electrical utility and left us vulnerable to what is now a monopoly controlled by a multi-national corporation.

When you vote you can never be sure what kind of a leader you are getting merely through party labels.

Unfortunatly history dictates that you can. Voters over the years are certain of "what kind of leader" they end up getting. True, party membership makes no differance.

Oil makes pigs out of many. Cartoon eyes with dollar signs are no longer funny, now that it's real.
