Employing the same PR techniques familiar to Canadians watching warily American politics, Harper has leant heavily on crime as his tool of choice to prise open Canadian resistance to the creation of a (privatized) prison economic model that has so famously made America the Number One incarcerating nation on the planet. He is now daring the Liberals, and lesser New Democrats, oppose his crime bill, saying, in so many words:
"You are either with us, or with the criminals."
In a second press conference in as many days on his proposed crime bill, Harper told the press:
"We know where Canadians stand - they are with us. It's now up to the opposition to tell us where they stand."
