Posted on Monday, December 20 at 11:21 by 4Canada
The test results raise troubling questions about whether rules banning the feeding of cattle remains to other cattle -- the primary way in which mad cow disease is spread -- are being routinely violated. This is another thing that amazes me that more people are not concerned with. If any of you can look at "Country Canada" from CBC. (I think they let you download their shows?) The one I saw called, "Shoot, Shovel and Shut Up", was most informative. The host went to Washington state, Colorado, and Kansas checking out what has been going on in the states since the BSE closed border. There is evidence the US government is covering up BSE that has gotten into the human food chain. One Kansas farmer went so far as to build his own lab to test 100% of his cows and all he needed was approval from Dept. of Agriculture and they would not okay him testing every one of his cows. So his meat cannot be exported out to Japan where his largest market is, so they are going broke too.

Bottom line is that we cannot trust our government agencies to make sure our food is safe.

When you see a politician (Ralph Klein) making comments like "self-respecting" rancher would not have taken the animal to slaughter but would instead have simply "shot, shovelled and shut up.", you know you can't trust the system. The fact that he said it at a meeting with US governors and Canadian Premieres is further evidence that not one of them really cares about food safety for North Americans. It's all about the money, right from top government officials, right through feed manufacturers. It seems to me that the only "self respecting" individuals involved are the lowly farmers, who themselves are a dying breed. Unfortunately, they are being duped by governments and big business into producing unsafe food while being assured that their best interests are being looked after. The only way to ensure that we consumers don't fall victim to BSE, Avian Flu, etc, is to protect ourselves. Obviously we can't trust the government. Eat locally produced, certified organic food and you'll know exactly what you're eating.

I agree Wraun, however I don't think we should give up on making safe, organic food the norm rather than the exception.
