Thinking Liberal Is Rebuked

OTTAWA (CP) - An outspoken Liberal backbencher earned a rebuke from the prime minister Wednesday when she called missile defence supporters "a coalition of the idiots." The debate over Canadian participation in the U.S. plan to build a space- based missile shield promises to be one of the hottest this autumn in a divided House of Commons under Prime Minister Paul Martin's minority Liberals. Carolyn Parrish, the Toronto-area MP with a history of anti- American comments, fanned the flames during a break from a Liberal caucus meeting. "We are not joining the coalition of the idiots," Parrish said at a small anti-missile-defence rally outside the Parliament buildings. "We should be joining the coalition of the wise." http://www.mytelus.com/news/article.do?pageID=news_home&articleID=1696968 [Editors note: The last time Ms Parrish spoke out about two of her colleagues, and called them 'Bastards', the media in both Canada nad the US had a field day. Now that she has referred to supporters of BMD as 'idiots' I expect that the media will once again twist this into an Anti-American statement. Please note: Anti-American and Anti-Canadian comments in this thread will be deleted. I will delete entire comments for one single violation of this policy. ViveLeCanada is about making Canada better, not bashing the US. It's also not a forum for our cousins to the south to fling mud at us. We are discussing Ms. Parrish, or BMD here, not Canada vs the United States. Play nice! Dr. Caleb]

That being said, I think the National Post is only trying to draw attention away from Ms Parrish's speech, where she told the group of BMD protesters from 'the Mad Grannies' that the Liberal Caucus were firmly in favour of BMD.<p> I did a quick scan of CNN, Google News, CBC and NP, and so far this morning, only the National Post has anything about this story.<p> Weapons of Mass Distraction, or just a slow news day? Jack Layton better stick to his guns and oppose any Liberal moves toward BMD.<p> <p>---<br>"If you must kill a man, it costs you nothing to be polite about it." Winston Churchill <br />

I like it when an MP has the backbone to tell it like it is!

I do too. Elsie Wayne comes to mind. I just hate it when the Media puts it's own spin on things and people gobble it up like it's truth!<p> <p>---<br>"If you must kill a man, it costs you nothing to be polite about it." Winston Churchill <br />

This site is also not about censorship, which is what you are engaging in with your little editor's note up top. If you insist on censoring, then I advocate that your article should be boycotted of any comments.

I am simply stating ahead of time what posts will be deleted, and why.<p> Censorship implies a limitation on free speech. I am not limiting your speech, I am simply adhereing to the Vive code. You are free to say what you want, you do not have the right to be heard.<p> <p>---<br>"If you must kill a man, it costs you nothing to be polite about it." Winston Churchill <br />

While I agree Ms Parish gets a little carried away and vocalizes what many think, she is a public figure and should have learned to curb her language. The fact that she has the guts to stand up against BMD is admirable however, and it shows that there are some politicians who aren't prepared to sell us out. I am not a Liberal fan by any means, but this tells me that party is not everything and in fact we should be looking at the candidate when we vote, not just the party policy.

That's rigth! People don't think for themselves. I especially like how politicans like MArtin try to censor their own party members: "There's no room for tha tkind of language." Another enemy of democracy.....way to go to the Jaques Chirac of the Liberal party. :)

<i>she is a public figure and should have learned to curb her language.</i><p> How so? She said, and I quote (supporters of BMD) are "a coalition of the idiots.".<p> I watched the whole speech. Afterwards, reporters said that she had called Americans 'idiots' when in fact she never used the word 'americians' one single time. It was <b>reporters</b> who decided that 'coalition of idiots' = 'americans', not her. She even asked them not to say that she had called Americans idiots, because she did not. If they were trying to draw the parallel that the phrase used by President Bush; "Coalition of the Willing" meant that Americans were the 'Coalition of idiots', then why aren't the British, Spanish, Ukrainians, Philipinos, Polish and Austrailians angry about being called 'idiots'? Are they not the coalition of the willing?<p> Do you disagree with her that supporters of BMD are indeed idiots, regardless of nationality?<p> I've been trying to find a link to the whole interview yesterday, but I imagine on the 6 O'clock news the interview will be so heavily edited it will not represent the report I saw on yesterday's Global News, al la Howard Dean.<p><p>---<br>"If you must kill a man, it costs you nothing to be polite about it." Always! I recite the FAQ before bed each night!<p> I just wanted to pre-emptively diffuse tempers flaring from the inevitable misconceptions arising from this story.<p> <p>---<br>"If you must kill a man, it costs you nothing to be polite about it." Winston Churchill <br />

I raise my chapeau to Dr. Caleb for trying to elevate the discussion over and above the common clichés and ranting. I also raise my chapeau to this MP demonstrating excellent backbencher backbone.

This being said, I think we need to praise the Americans on Vive more often on the better stuff they are doing (there is some if we know where to look!). I think we pretty much all agree anyway that their military and safety buildup is hogwash.

I am only suggesting that MsParrish knows that her words will be repeated, in or out of context and calling any group of people idiots will of course cause media spin! I do agree that those who support BMD are in fact ill informed or if they do realize the impact, that they are fueling a fire which will not be quenched, then they are not only a coalition of 'idiots' they are also endangering the public at large.

The fact that media will take one inflamatory comment and reuse it whenever possible is historic, look at Trudeau's infamous fuddle duddle, they were still rehashing when he died!

I think we are usually criticizing the American elites and government when we criticize the US--whether the citzens are at fault is another discussion.....I have read some very interesting comments fom Americans on this site, but I personally don't see them on here very often.

To add to what I said, we should recognize people ragrdless of their country, but I honestly think that decent Americans are losing the battle in their own country right now. I think the U.S. will get worse before it has a chance to get better. How do progressives get their voice heard in a 2-party country?
