After finishing a heartbreaking second the last three years in this tournament, Canada left nothing in doubt by scoring four times in the second period for a five-goal lead heading into the final 20 minutes. Ryan Getzlaf, Danny Syvret, Jeff Carter, Patrice Bergeron, Anthony Stewart and Dion Phaneuf scored for Canada before a sellout crowd of 11,862 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena. Canadians are asking, why do americans hate us? They hate our freedoms: our freedom of religion, our freedom of speech, our freedom to disagree with each other.

"This story doesn't threaten our sovereignty, but it sure does alot for Canadian Pride!"

Perhaps this story does not threathen (or increase) our Sovereignty but this win IMHO represents a powerful metaphor to what (I hope) is happening in this world.

The business of hockey as circus entertainment for the masses is falling while the not so commercial aspects of it have now the upper hand and the recognition by the People. International hockey cooppetition would be like the United Nations. The rules are not made in the US in order to get maximum publicity revenue streams, and royalties. Neither do they primarly cater to the interests of the related merchants such as the merchants of war, in spite of the agression aspects of the practice. The powerful corporate interests have not totally undermined it (yet?). I can however see Robocop hockey on the horizon with specially shielded equipment, remotely controlled android (genetically engineered or drug enhanced) enforcers amongst others, virtual reality gear, publically traded hockey team stock, etc...

Am sure Cherry will be happy with the "boys" meanwhile. I would not make him a top-10 for that either... Hopefully Cherry will not use this to badmouth and undermine european hockey anymore. Or sell us the value of US "deep integration" via hockey.

We are, THE WORLD HOCKEY SUPERPOWER!!! This team was a machine! You know, look at the women`s team, who I am absolutely in love with, they have NEVER lost a world championship. And The men and women won olympic gold in 2002, men won the world cup in 2004, and the men won the worlds in 2003 and 2004. And the world under 17 championship, its Pacific vs west for gold, and Atlantic beat Ontario for bronze, making it an all Canadian final four! But to see those Canadian fans go to Grand Forks, and really show their Canadian pride. That shows me that there`s no way Canadians will let this country die! Hockey is our religion! The arena is our church! And this saturday I get to go pray... I mean play!

It was nice to see Canada win. I would have preferred a revenge against the U.S. for last year's collapse, but Russia--good Lord, that country produces great hockey players, but (not saying Canadian players are angels) very poor sportsmen, in some cases. All the whining and chewing at referees, the stickwork, the diving . . . THAT's why a 6-1 victory looks even better. The Russians know that international rules prevent Phaneuf and Coburn and Stewart from physically destroying opponents who give them the stick, so all Canada could do in retaliation was be classy and win the game, which, of course . . . they did. One more thing: Ovechkin is a fantastic player, but I hope he remembers that NHL players don't appreciate hotdogging before he does his post-goal salsa dance in front of Dan Cloutier, or while Scott Stevens is gliding past . . .
