There Is Never Going To Be A NATO Victory In Afghanistan

Five years after the Taliban were bombed out of power, Afghanistan is falling into the same morass of bloodletting as Iraq. The country is not riven by the sectarian conflict between Shia and Sunni that is fragmenting Iraq, but in every other way security has collapsed. A third of the country is "racked by violent insurgency", in Kofi Annan's words. Suicide bombings are on the rise, with 230 people killed last month; foreign contractors are kidnapped, police officers and government officials murdered. The Taliban are resurgent. British forces are taking casualties in clashes that Brigadier Ed Butler, the outgoing commander of UK forces, calls more ferocious than anything in Iraq. A retired US general, Barry McCaffrey, reported this spring that, unlike Iraq's insurgents, the Taliban operate in battalion-sized units of 400 men, equipped with "excellent weapons and field equipment" and new technology for roadside bombs. http://www.commondreams.org/views06/1020-22.htm

General Sir Richard Dannatt's remarks seem to be more about "winning" a war. Afghanistan has more interested parties partaking. More Nations are willing to be envolved with the participation due to the flimsy excuse that originated the invasion. The general has a more favorable war in Afghanistan then in Iraq.
It will not make any differance to the Afghani if the Taliban wins or looses. It makes a differance to them as to whom they favour. The Westerners have a weird culture and many Afghani have died trying to understand it. The Taliban has at least a culture that is understandable. NO one will ever control Afghanistan but it's a good place for warmongers to ply their trade.

Ask the USSR, a one time world super power, about victory in Afghanistan. And they had the geographic "advantage" of bordering Afghanistan.
