U.S. Launches Controversial Rocket Toward Nfld.

The Titan IV rocket launched from Cape Canaveral shortly before 9 p.m. EST and successfully cast off a military satellite several minutes later, observers said. The mission caused a diplomatic scramble earlier in April, when officials revealed that a 10- tonne solid rocket booster and other materials would land near oil platforms on the Grand Banks, about 350 kilometres east of St. John's. Newfoundland and Labrador's premier, Danny Williams, said three of the platforms - including Hibernia - would be evacuated. He called on the Americans to cancel the mission. The U.S. Air Force Space Command postponed it repeatedly, blaming technical problems. At the same time, it assured Canadians that the chance of anyone being hurt was 1 in a trillion. If you go to the link on cbc website, they brag about it being a Lockheed Martin product, and part of the BMD, so I guess we really said no, but meant...

Most satellites shot off from Florida or the Guiana Space Centre are going to have a trajectory that carries them up the east coast, especially polar satellites. Your MSat followed a similar path to this:
Considering that this has been going on since 1950, and considering you have done the same exact thing, could it be that you are just looking for something else to bitch about?
As I see it basically the problem is this. Since nothing was "fired at" us here in Canada, we simply stretch things just a weeee bit to say that anything sent up in the air is over the Earth. And Canada is on the planet Earth. Ergo...whatever went up there is over Canada! Simple logic, right? RIGHT! The dirty so and so's. No means NO! Not with anybody, or anything, anywhere. If you are an American. But if you're not American? Well, come on over friends...let's just sit down and discuss it ever so "politely" over a nice cup of tea! I have to say, that IF something had a chance of landing on us, and our government said no, then by all means, don't do it. And if they did it anyway, I would be pi**ed. That was not the case. Knowledgeable scientists spent many hours/days/months/years, and globs of money researching, and plotting trajectories. They kindly informed us IN ADVANCE (we didn't "discover" anything here)that there was a one in a TRILLION chance of one possible piece of debris landing possibly within 65 to 85 kilometres of "Hibernia". Hibernia. Now lets remind ourselves what "Hibernia" is, okay? It is an OIL DRILLING RIG (one of those things, you know...which produces petroleum/crude which people kill people over, and which pollutes when drilled for and when used, and environmentally conscious people -like us(?)- don't do that to their environment, remember, and which is owned and operated by BIG BUSINESS, our big business) over 325 kilometres off our Eastern shoreline out in the Atlantic. SO far I see no eveil, diabolocal plot to kill us all and rule the universe. Sorry. But I just don't. If we felt that one of OUR huge corporation's business investment may have been in jeopardy, and this launch might have cost them a few loonies...then what are we doing here all over this very site trashing big corporations and oil companies, oil exploration which trashes the environment, and now we are fighting tooth and claw to defend their investments for them? Excuse me? What gives? Personally, having better communications among the inhabitants of the world (thanks to the satellite) beats the he** out of the fat cat's Hibernia profits!!! This site gets to people over the internet which is relayed to a large portion of the planet via what? SATELLITES! Oh, well. You can lead the horsies to wa-wa, but you can't make 'em drink, can you...*SIGH*...have we become quite hypocritical here yet, or what?

How far out do Canada’s territorial waters extend from shore? Perhaps 350 km east of St. John’s is in international waters?

Canada’s territorial waters extend 19KM from shore and Canada's exlcusive economic zone is 320KM according to international law.

I think that those values might be due to mistaken conversions to SI units. The territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zones are measured in nautical miles rather than statute miles, so the SI equivalents of 12 nautical miles and 200 nautical miles would be 22.224 km and 370.4 km respectively — which makes more sense, since it would be in Canada’s interest to construct oil platforms within its EEZ. Clearly, though, 350 km east of St. John’s is well outside of Canadian territorial waters, thus well away from Canada — although not well away from Canadian-owned property.
