Handley, a Metis who grew up in the bush of Northern Saskatchewan but now lives on a lake near Yellowknife, says his government has worked out a plan for achieving provincial status by 2006.

He hoped to press the issue in a meeting with Prime Minister Paul Martin prior to the first ministers' conference Friday.

More power to them! If you think your region of Canada gets the short end of the stick from Ottawa, the territories get it 10X worse!<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />"The greatest price of not participating in politics is being governed by your inferiors." I absolutely agree with this,it\'s really terrible that this has been in the works for 17 yrs. I hope it happens, but I bet it\'ll somehow be tied to the election. You know everybody in the NWT has to vote for Liberals, then we\'ll see!

Who cares. We have bigger fish to fry.

The federal government needs more power over our resources, not less power. This will be the same crap that Alberta gives Canada. \"Give us more power, we don\'t want the N.E.P. Mr. Trudeau.\"

I hear your frustration, but we better start caring about all Canadians, no matter where they live, the people living in the North in Canada, NWT, Yukon and Nunavit are faced with situations that the rest of us can\'t even comprehend.

We need to get informed and giving the NWT provincial status will enable them to have more say in perhaps getting some hospitals to remote areas, perhaps lower the cost of living etc. When some of these people are faced with life threatening illness, they must wait for an air-ambulance to fly them out of wherever they are to get a doctor, this is nuts. All Canadians no matter where they live ought to have the same rights, including decent health care, education, homes and not have to pay ridiculous prices for food! Until we start to see and listen to the needs of all Canadians we are no different then the politicians, who only listen to those with the bucks. Give the NWT provincial status, give them some power over their unique situation.

That doesn\'t mean they become separate from Canada, it means they become a province, like the other 10, with the same rights and responsibilities. No premier has the right to act exclusively without considering Canada as a whole, we are one country, I don\'t think we lose when we allow people provincial status. Perhaps I have missed some threat in this, but personally I don\'t see it.

No, what Alberta wants is less government wasting our tax dollars. Albertans have learned since the NEP put our economy into a tailspin how to do more with less $. Or rather, how to do a bare minimum with whatever crumbs the Feds toss back to us after they take their co-workers out for $400 bottles of wine over taxpayer funded luncheons.<p> I can appreciate the position of the Territories. Canada is now the #2 producer of conflict free diamonds in the world. The NWT is the sole producer of those diamonds, and they have no say in the taxes generated by their sale.<p> They bust their a$$es digging them up, cutting and polishing them, and do you think the Feds will even send back enough tax money to pave their gravel roads? With the size of the NWT, ambulances are useless. Will the government fund another aircraft or helicopter, or even get a hospital that they can go to without a 3 day drive?<p> Last time they asked for more healthcare, Cretin gave them enough to extend their budget by 3 DAYS. And he told them to take it or leave it.<p> We don't have bigger fish to fry. These are Canadians. They have troubles. Your provinces problems cannot be blamed on Alberta, and ignoring these people does not help them or become you.<p> <p>---<br>"History does not repeat itself, but it does rhyme" Mark Twain <br />"The greatest price of not participating in politics is being governed by your inferiors." If the NWT want to be a province, let them ,but I still think that the federal government should have a large control over resources. We`re too decentralized as it is. And it wasn`t the NEP that put the economy into a tailspin. We were already in the midst of a huge recession in the early 80`s, the biggest since the depression.

Thw biggest waste of government spending was the 100 billion corproate tax cut, in only five years.

Tax cuts have been proven to fail, time and time again. We shouldn\'t be giving breaks to millionaire corporations, as they send jobs out of the country. Trickle down economics are bogus. AND, if I make 100,000 a year, I pay about 50% tax, if I am a millionaire corporation, I pay 35-38%. Why the F**k is that acceptable?!!!

Also, don\'t tell me givernment\'s waste money on good things. If you watched the national this past week, you would\'ve seen that Canada\'s Canoe Museum Collection, the biggest in the world, is being stored in a dumpy warehouse, because they are only 1.8 million short!!! The canoe is a Canadian symbol.

Also, the Canadian SPorts Hall of Fame at the CNE in Toronto, hasn\'t elected someone in 2 years, because they CAN\'T AFFORD TO! They may have to close, after being around for 100 yeras, thanks to Paul Martin\'s budget in 1995!

Ao, a few million in history cut, while corporations get 100 billion. Criminal!!! That\'s like 1 trillion in U.S. cuts. Gross.

In fact, you have billion dollar corporations in Canada that pay ZERO tax! And yes, I too see so many Canadian \'symbols\' and institutions being thrown out because the government says it doesn`t have the cash. BOVINE DEFECATION! Jane Stewart- mysteriously \'lost\' (I`ll just say it- STOLE) $1 billion. Martin`s CSL received something to the tune of $180 million in taxpayers money. The sweatshipping technique wasn`t enough, apparently. The level of corruption in the Canadian government would make alot of tinpot dictators blush!

I am not suggesting that each province should hoard their resources for the betterment of that province; the reality is that Canadians should be the first beneficiaries of all resources in this country. It is ludicrous to suggest that just because I live in a certain province I have more rights than any other Canadian to that wealth. It is the birthright of all Canadians and everyone living in Canada, (ie Canadian citizen, landed immigrants) should reap the benefits of living in the greatest country in the world. Because we all know that today we have oil in Alberta, diamonds in the NWT etc., but yesterday we had cod in Newfoundland!

If we could just learn to spread the wealth around a little better, no one in Canada would be living in poverty. It is crazy to see the stats on poverty, homelessness and so on in a country as wealthy as ours.

It reminds of a rich family living high on the hog, while a brother or sister is homeless on the street,... because he/she moved away while the money was being doled out. Hey you didn\'t live here at the time, what can we say...sorry to bad, hope you don\'t starve but, that\'s the way she goes. Hey we all know it\'s cold up here in Canada but that is pretty damn cold!
