Taxpayers Shortchanged On Energy Revenues

A Pembina Institute report says oil and gas companies are being undercharged on royalties. EDMONTON (CP) - Governments in Western Canada are shortchanging their citizens by selling off rich oil and natural gas deposits to corporations too cheaply, says a new report. Governments are also making poor use of the non-renewable resource money, spending it on day-to-day programs instead of investing for the future, it says. "They are undercharging companies for the development of public oil and gas resources," says the report, released Tuesday by the Pembina Institute, an Alberta-based non-profit think-tank. "These developments come at the expense of the environment and current and future citizens of Canada." Oil and gas companies paid about $16 billion last year to Canadian governments through royalties, corporate income taxes and land sales. Nearly half of that, or $7.7 billion, went to Alberta http://www.mytelus.com/news/article.do?pageID=news_home&articleID=1689568

If we go and raise the royalties we leave ourselves open to an orchastrated coup. Ask Chavez - he knows all about it.

If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.

Then adopt Chavez's strategy; tell the poor that this will put money in their pockets. Since there are more poor than rich, anyone opposing it will quickly become unpopular.<p> Perhaps a little gunfire in the streets will wake people up to what is happening with their natural resources, and government in general.<p> <p>---<br>"If you must kill a man, it costs you nothing to be polite about it." Yes I find it rather amusing that Cline says that it will discourage the oil companies from drilling, and cost jobs....ha ha ha

You've got to be kidding, the difference between us and Norway is huge, and they want us to believe they won't go for our black gold because it'll cut into their billions of profits. How stupid do they really think we are??? Maybe I shouldn't ask that???

Compare the O&G royalties Canada gets with the royalties Chavez gets for Venezuela. I think we get <1% royalties on our oil, while Chavez doubled theirs to 30%, and that was after nationalizing their oil. I really don't see the US overthrowing a government over something like that. The Reagan government pressured the Trudeau government to kill the NEP but eventually even they backed down. You never know, with the US project for a new American century. But yeah, i doubt they`d invade Canada, given that we`re a high profile G8 nation. And they need Canada`s oil and gas, so there`s no danger of a loss of jobs. But Washington would surely put a lot of pressure on Ottawa. But we`d just have to stay the course! But no doubt, Canada must show more benefit from its own resource extractions and exports. But again, our politicians are a bunch of whores. In fact, I don`t think it`s an accident that our olympic athletes are under-funded and doing not so well. Our government doesn`t want Canadians to take pride in our own country- Then it`s easier, in their little minds, to sell us out!!

Regarding Norway, I recently heard that they have managed to create a fund of $120 billion from royalties from the oil and gas. In Alberta, we have managed to accumulate a grand total of about $12 billion. I also believe Alaska charges more royalties for their oil and gas.
