Ottawa Reaches 10M Settlement With Arar

I have to point out that the people responsible are not paying a dime for their crimes, instead it is you and me who had nothing at all to do with this mess that are being forced to pay for it. Arar should get compensation, but it should come out of the pockets of the criminals who are responsible. Furthermore, it angers me to no end that Harper is expected to apologize on behalf of Canadians who had nothing what-so-ever to do with what happened to Arar! Arar was victimized, but this payout and apology business is only victimizing innocent Canadians. I don't want to see insulting apologies and forced payouts of tax money on behalf of innocent people, instead I want to see the actual criminals responsible pay Arar out of their own pockets and go to prison for their crimes. - RG

The Arrar case came out into the open, because he was released and demanded justice.

The real terrorists of the world will make it certain that no such mistakes will again be made and those "renditioned", will never see daylight again.

Good luck to Mr.Arrar and family and hope he'll get over the trauma, as many of us had to in the past.

Ten mil for getting treated as a terrorist and tortured for a year in Syria? I'd take that trade. Time to start polishing up my fake RPG-7.

If enough of us get arrested on false charges and then take them to court, we just might beat this phony war on terror.

"he will also issue a formal apology to Arar on behalf of Canadians".

    I agree.

That Harper assumes to apologize of my behalf, for his allowing something to happen that NEVER should have absolutely infuriates me.

How dare that pompous ass link myself, and people like me, to his guilt.

They are regretting Arar survived. It could have been $45 million and that scares them the most. Canadians are saying to themselves that it couldn't happen to them. What could happen is terrifying. We now know the value of Canadian safety. What will stop the authotities for illegaly incarcerating people in secrecy. One can't expect Harper to not copy the Americans. Prior to Bush, people were detained and sent to various American prisons throughout the world and without the events of 911 to justify it. Do we really know if Canada is not doing the same thing?

Born again, predestined people, like Harper, can do no wrong, therefore have no guilt.

In any case, it was the Liberal govt. who did it and ordered the inquiry. Under Harper there wouldn't have been any, as the US also can do no wrong. (-:)

    I agree Ed,

Harper would never have had an inquiry and him, Day and Diane Ablonczy would likely be carrying on with Arar as "terrorist" to this day and that would be providing Arar ever returned from Syria or left Syria alive. The Liberals, i.e. Martin, McLellan, Graham and Cotler plus any RCMP or CSIS members that were working for the USA rather than Canadian interests should be the ones that pay out of their personal pockets for all the lawyers fees and the 10+ Million that Arar deserves in spades!

The Cons are using Arar now like some paid political announcement.
