Posted on Monday, March 29 at 13:04 by tifani
The northern attention comes as international interest in Canada's claim to the far north is increasing. Climate change is bringing increased activity to the area because reduced ice cover makes it possible for ships to travel between Asia and Europe through the Northwest Passage, a far shorter route...

Canada currently has four international territorial disputes in the north, two with the United States, one with Russia and one with Denmark, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs...

TINY HANS ISLAND, COVETED BY DANES TYPIFIES A REGION'S UNCERTAIN BORDERS: Denmark has gone so far as to send warships to the island and plant it's flag on the frozen soil.

I'm glad to hear that our government is actually putting the money towards things that will actually help defend our territory. Considering the possibilities of oil and other valuable resources, it will probably be defense against opportunistic companies instead of countries though.

    Our companies, instead of theirs.

Also anybody read the two artciles in the National Post on Saturday, and last Wednesday (?) IT talked about our recent border dispute with the Danish over a 1 Sq. KM island halfway-between Canada and Greenland. It also mentioned how we have 2 border disputes with the United States, and 1 with Russia as well. Yippie! Seriously though, a good article by the Post for a change.

-One question: The Danish say they will negotiate regarding the dispute. If they got the ocean-floor rights to any possible oil and gas in the area, do they have a right to a 200-300KM circle around the tiny island as welll, as a country does?

Maybe we could split it, or give our navy some practice. :) It sound like the Danish have already sent warships to the island, and put up a flag. I hope the States isn't is on this.

Thinking about it, having a larger nearby Danish presence is probably good for Canada-EU relations...

    How do you figure?

Well, I saw an article on notacolony.ca that talked about how Martin met with European leaders to discuss increasing the "Flow of goods." Everyone says this is a good thing, that it will diversify our trade, but we've heard that before. I don't trust the European money-grubbers any more than ours.

I figure that it's better to be in bed with the EU than with the US, just based on economic policies. The EU tends to be much less evil (for example, they actually did something about the Microsoft desktop monopoly).

Good point, ivanherk. I just worry that Europe is moving down the same path, but they do have P.R., so they can hold the leaders more accountable.

-As long as we have some recourse, and equal control, I'm all for it.

Didn't Denmark turn down the EU and the Euro? Or was it just the Euro?

Denmark should be of huge interest to us. The monarchy has been around for longer than any other in the world. And the lifestyle is more sustainable, from what I've read/heard. It sounds like a model nation in many ways. Managed to stay out of WW2 without giving in to the Nazi's even though they're a neighboring nation.

Heck, the Danish aren't even uptight about nudity. They just continue to live well and enjoy life. Maybe having them around wouldn't be so bad for us.

I checked the EU site, and Denmark was listed as a member. They did reject the Euro though, much like the UK. (Okay so the UK technically accepted it, but haven't gotten around to switching yet)
