China, Russia To Hold Joint Military Exercise

Posted on Tuesday, August 02 at 23:56 by whelan costen
The announcement highlights warming ties between Beijing and Moscow after decades of Cold War hostility. Their reconciliation has been driven in part by mutual unease at U.S. power and a fear of Islamic extremism in Central Asia. The exercises with army, navy and air forces will take place on China's Shandong peninsula and in the Russian city of Vladivostok and in nearby waters, the Defence Ministry said. It didn't give details of planned activities. The exercises are meant to “strengthen the capability of the two armed forces in jointly striking international terrorism, extremism and separatism,” the ministry said in a statement carried by the official Xinhua News Agency. The Defence Ministry tried to reassure China's neighbours, saying the exercises “neither aim at any third party nor concern ... the interests of any third country.” Read the article: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20050802.wchinrus0802/BNStory/International/ [Proofreader's note: this article was edited for spelling and typos on August 3, 2005]

Wouldn't be so sure of that though. A better understanding of the relationship between the two nations suggests this is not a bad thing any way you add it up.

While many at this site can't see past their anti-American noses, it might be an idea to consider how well the Tibetans or democracy protesters appreciate Chinese military power. The Chinese won't be trying to create Constitutions or representative governments in other countries - they would much prefer to deal with brutal dictators like themselves.

China could be a real threat to Canada in the future, especially since their corrupt socialist/communist policies will mean that they will have to find others to blame for the inevitable problems. They're already using nationalism and xenophobia to whip up their population since communism is such an obvious failure.

Interesting leap in logic. China and Russia are concerned about increasing US power and lack of control of extremist groups . . .and we're anti-American.

Yup. even written down, I still don't see how those fit together . . .

And yet, when we as Canadians apply the same measure to the United States' obvious deisre for complete econmic and political control over Canada that China appears to have for the US, we're also anti-American. But Americans are somehow not anti-Chinese, they are 'patriots'. Hmmmmm.

A little too quick to play the 'anti-' card there Anon.

Don't know how you see it Doc, but this alliance looks temporary to me. Russia has been so mismanaged that they are forced to sell weapons to a potential enemy--Bad for the entire world.

As American Pat Buchanan (what do you think about him?) has noted, there are only 8 million Russians east of the Urals, who aren't doing very well, and there are 1.25 billion Chinese just south. Ick.

That's a totally confusing reply, do you have a point?

And, are you seriously saying that this site is not all about anti-Americanism? That's the only form of patriotism Canadians are officially allowed to have!

Russia and China have been allies for many decades. I don't see that changing. Much like the US and Canada, they are friendly neighbours.

I've asked it before and never recieved any answer: Show me where this site is anti-American.

Your freerepubic mentality bores me. And no, I didn't make a spelling mistake.

The Wikipedia article on Siberia states that it comprises 9.6 million km² and has a population density of three people per km² — if so, that would make its population closer to 29 million. However, they’re still dwarfed by the 107 million who live in Inner Manchuria alone …

---
[The people] will forget themselves, but in the sole faculty of making money, and will never think of uniting to effect a due respect for their rights.

You're kidding right? If you can't detect the anti-Americanism in this site then you are wilfully blinding yourself. There's even an 'Eye on Uncle Sam' category. This site epitomizes Canadians as a bunch of small-minded losers.

Standard freerepublic answer #2. If it's so easy, show me. You would be the first.

If I were kidding, I wouldn't waste my time asking this 'simple' question of the trolls.

Great, that's all we need, another irresponsible superpower such as China.

The Americans may be jerks, but at least I can sleep without worrying about their nuclear warheads falling into the hands of commie spies.
