Jobless Rate In Manufacturing Below National Average

"The report finds that despite large declines in employment in manufacturing, many firms in the sector are reporting skill shortages," said Andrew Sharpe, economist and one of the authors of the report, who described the finding as "surprising."

"A sector in decline laying off workers and experiencing mass bankruptcy would normally not be expected to suffer from labour shortages," the report noted.

Yet, it does, it added.

Last year, 12.5 per cent of manufacturers who were surveyed cited skilled labour shortages as a main production impediment, which the report noted is the highest proportion in more than a quarter century, and double the proportion only three years earlier.

As such, the government and business should address what is a need for increased and improved apprenticeship programs for the sector, the study concludes.
