Dion faces Quebec revolt

Quebec Grits say they'll yank his membership if he doesn't resign

MONTREAL -- Federal Liberals from Quebec will move to show Stephane Dion the door if he doesn't give up leadership of the party on his own, Sun Media has learned.

Former Liberal candidate Pierre-Luc Bellerose, who ran for the party in Joliette, northeast of Montreal, said dissatisfied members will begin the process to revoke Dion's party membership if he doesn't quit as Liberal leader.

He said his strategy is supported by a number of influential members of the party, along with a dozen riding association presidents and a few elected MPs from across Quebec.

Bellerose said he is convinced Dion has lost control over the party in Quebec and the organization is no longer following its leader.

The results of the March 17 byelections did nothing to appease discontent with Dion, he added.

"The pressure for him to resign is getting increasingly stronger," Bellerose explained. "The means we see to this end are drastic, but we hope that he'll get the message and leave of his own accord."

Should Dion fail to heed this warning, Bellerose has threatened to invoke Article 3.7.1 of the Quebec wing of the federal Liberal party's statutes and regulations to force him to resign...

I think he's a 2nd string defenseman from Chicoutimi in the QMJHL.
Or maybe he's the guy who invented poutine?

It really doesn't matter much if they "yank" Dion. The Liberal party is still Tweedle Dee to the Conservative Tweedle Dum (and both are doppelgangers of the Demopublicans in the US)

well there is a process and they will have to follow it.. I am in favour of a leadership review.. if it is decided he is to be replaced there will have to be a convention..

The provisions of this article give the Quebec wing the right to strip a party member of his membership.

yes it does but its a different situation when he is leader and was elected at a national convention... he could lose membership in quebec but obtain it in another province as well someone could give him their seat which would keep him in parliament...

I realy don't think to much will come of this. The only reason it really grabbed so much attention was because there wasn't much else happening for news.

I wonder if a mod could merge the two threads for us

I can't find the Liberal Party of Canada (Québec) constitution docs online so I have no idea what the grounds are for invoking Article 3.7.1. Nevertheless, this tiny clique from QC are acting in a decidedly undemocratic fashion. Speaking as a Québecer, I am not surprised. I could care less if the Federal Liberals implode but the fact that these weasely men think they can and should run the democratically elected leader of their party out of town is shameful.

I saw this in the paper yesterday.

All the protestations by our resident fence-post LIBRANOs about the by-elections came to mind.

This appears to be much mare than a "small clique" as the byelections have indicated. To remove him requires more than a 'small clique' by the party's own process. DION has little to no backing other than the sheeple fence-post LIBRANOs.

    HEE HEE HAW HAW

I'll have to check into merging the two threads, I'm not exactly sure yet how that works on the new forum system...

The leader of any "Democratically" Elected Party is just a figurehead. The reason they come and go so often is to give the people the false impression that the political system changes and adopts to their needs. No story here - just more mainstream media rubbish.
