Alberta Wide Coalition Formed: Keep Alberta Nuclear Free

Monday April 14th, 2008

Concerned citizen groups have banded together from across the province to keep Alberta Nuclear Free. They are mobilizing to warn Albertans about the risks and dangerous legacies associated with the nuclear industry. They will be working to provide Albertans with educational opportunities and information on the many impacts and costs of nuclear energy, as well ensure that the provincial government consults fairly and transparently with Albertans on this issue and hears their voices and their concerns. With the recent proposal from Bruce Power to build a reactor in Peace Country and other towns being actively courted by the Nuclear Industry, concern is rising in Alberta, and many folks are realizing that the decision on whether nuclear power has a place in Alberta is a provincial question, not just a local one.

Representatives from locations such as Peace River, Grimshaw, Grande Prairie, Whitecourt, Onoway, Hinton, Edson, Edmonton, Two Hills, and Calgary, met in Edmonton on Saturday to officially form the coalition for a Nuclear Free Alberta.

“We will be bringing together the many voices of Albertans to ensure that our government listens to the people and hears their concerns on this dangerous and dirty source of energy” , says Pat MacNamara, president of Nuclear Free Alberta. “As a past resident of Port Hope, Ontario, I have witnessed first hand the damage caused by the nuclear industry and the lack of concern shown by the federal government. We must not allow the same thing to happen to Albertans”.

In the coming months, Nuclear Free Alberta will be reaching out to concerned Albertans and diverse groups to join in solidarity in opposing the controversial nuclear bid for the province.
