Prime Minister Chretien. Thank you, Mr. President. I cannot add to what the President said. He covered the ground very well. I think the relations between America and Canada could not be better. We are solving problems when we have one. We are working with America in the war against terrorism. Our troops are in the fight at this moment in Afghanistan. You know, in the snow, we're good at it, President, you know. And we-----

President Bush. You're good on the ice, too.

Prime Minister Chretien. We are good on the ice, too--and both men and women. And so--and we have to work on our other problems. Thank you for the statement you made on softwood lumber. I think that the defense of our values and against terrorism are extremely important for Canadians. And we have worked very well together.

For me, I should say a few words in French, with your permission.

Prime Minister Chretien. Can you translate after that?

[At this point, Prime Minister Chretien spoke in French and then resumed speaking in English.]

I want to tell you that we spoke about Africa, and I want to say--I said that in French-- I want to say thank you for what you have announced today, about the programs that you have announced, because as you know, at Kananaskis in Canada, at the G-8, the main topic will be Africa. And we want to establish a partnership with them. They came to Genoa last June; you and our colleagues asked me to take----at that time. And I think that the partnership, and with your contribution, is developing very well.

Next month I will be traveling in Africa for--visiting five or six countries to build a partnership but to reward good governance, human rights, to make sure that they have real democracies, and so on. And those who don't do that will have to--not to be rewarded, because they will not meet what the world wants.

So thank you again, Mr. President.

No reason for a leader of a country not to be civil...we can save the asshole comments for Dion and the Liberals

I have no love for the Liberals. And diplomacy is all well and good. But don't forget that the substance of their meeting is supposed to be about NAFTA and the SPP, and what they're doing is smiling and waving and playing up their friendliness to try and diffuse people's legitimate anger over the completely undemocratic way that the SPP has been conducted thus far (no parliamentary or congressional oversight).

It's a nice show, but it's BS to keep us from talking about the elephant in the room.

So excuse me for pointing out that the emperors have no clothes. Or rather, that they want us all to buy our clothes at Wal-Mart.

PS Yes, both the Libs and Cons have both taken the same submissive position at these agreements when talking to the US. I was AT the protest and counter-summit in Calgary when Bush was in Kananaskis, and disagreed as much with Chretien then as I do with Harper now.

So he's "standing up for Canada" and saying something of substance in your opinion? It's a** kissing. He's praising the President, and any (extremely mild) attempt to paint himself as ever disagreeing with the man is spin for the benefit of the next election, much like Harper's supposedly strong positioning on arctic sovereignty even as he sells off our sovereignty completely through agreements like the SPP.
