China shuts 83 inefficient coal plants to reduce consumption
London (Platts)--28Apr2008
In a continued effort to curb polluting emissions and to improve energy efficiency, China has shut down 83 small coal-fired power units with a combined installed capacity of 4,700 MW between January 1 and April 15, 2008, the National Development and Reform Commission said April 25.

In accordance with NDRC's energy development blueprint, China will shut down small coal-fired power units with a combined installed capacity of 13,000 MW in 2008.

According to NDRC's calculation, the shutdown of the 83 small coal-fired power units will help save 7.1 million mt of thermal coal, cut carbon dioxide emissions by 14.2 million mt and cut sulfur dioxide emissions by 120,000 mt.

At the end of 2007, energy-efficient plants accounted for 58.9% of the coal-fired generation facilities, up from 43.4% in 2003.
