Business lobbies from pork producers to international corporate banks are stepping up their campaign for the U.S.-South Korea Free Trade Agreement after the two countries resolved a long-standing dispute over American beef imports.
Still, the way forward is clouded. Labor groups and two major U.S. automakers, backed by their Capitol Hill allies, say the agreement doesn’t do nearly enough to open the Korean auto market.
And, for now at least, the Korean agreement’s fate remains entangled with the stalled trade pact with Colombia. And lobbyists offer the full range of predictions — from dire to confident — on whether Congress will allow the deal to move forward this year.
