The North American Free Trade Agreement is being threatened by a wave of protectionism coming from U.S. political leaders, Quebec Premier Jean Charest warned Wednesday.
A day after Senator Barack Obama claimed the Democratic presidential nomination, Charest said he plans to lobby the next president to keep the free trade deal intact.
Obama has campaigned on the promise to overhaul NAFTA, claiming it has never lived up to its promise.
“The protectionist reflex is very strong,” Charest said. “It is stronger among the Democrats than what we are hearing from the Republicans.”
The Quebec premier made the comments at a conference hosted by North America’s SuperCorridor Coalition, a non-profit group dedicated to increasing trade within the continent.
