This action alert has been posted with a sample letter for you to email to the prime minister at http://www.canadians.org/action/2008/18-Sep-08.html.
As reported in the Globe and Mail on September 18, "Canadian and European officials say they plan to begin negotiating a massive agreement to integrate DEAL WOULD EXCEED SCOPE OF NAFTA The article states, "The proposed pact would far exceed the scope of older agreements such as NAFTA by encompassing not only unrestricted trade in goods, services and investment and the removal of tariffs, but also the free movement of skilled people and an open market in government services and procurement – which would require that Canadian governments allow European companies to bid as equals on government contracts for both goods and services and end the favouring of local or national providers of public-sector services." TEXT OF THE DEAL WON'T BE RELEASED DURING THE ELECTION The Globe reports, “Because of the election, Mr. Harper appears to have decided not to unveil a full text of the proposed agreement, but instead to use the summit to inaugurate the trade talks with the launch of a 'scoping exercise' that will quickly set the goals of the pact and lead to formal 'comprehensive trade and investment negotiations' to begin in 'early 2009,' according to communications between senior Canadian and European officials examined by The Globe and Mail…The two governments have completed a detailed study of the proposed agreement that will be unveiled shortly after the election, should the Conservatives win. Both Ottawa and Brussels have had staff work on a draft text for a deal they had hoped would be introduced at a Canada-EU summit, to be attended by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Mr. Harper in Montreal on Oct. 17.” BIG BUSINESS BACKS THE DEAL While the public has not been allowed to see the study or the draft text, apparently large corporations have. The article notes, "Proponents, including all of TAKE E-mail Prime Minister Stephen Harper at pm@pm.gc.ca today and demand that the full text of the proposed agreement and the detailed study of it be released immediately. You can also cc Stephane Dion, Liberal Party of Canada,Dion.S@parl.gc.ca; Jack Layton, New Democratic Party of Canada, Layton.J@parl.gc.ca; Gilles Duceppe, Bloc Québécois,Duceppe.G@parl.gc.ca; SAMPLE LETTER Prime Minister, I join with the Council of Canadians in the demand that you immediately release the full text of the proposed Canada-EU deep economic integration agreement and the detailed study of it so that the Canadian public is able to make as informed a choice as possible at the polls on Tuesday October 14. Given the recent news that a In the 2006 election, you ran on a campaign of accountability. Part of that campaign included a promise that, "significant international treaties will be submitted for votes in Parliament." How accountable is it of you not to release the draft text of a major trade agreement that reportedly rivals NAFTA in scope because of the election? (your name)

Reality, of course, in the form of a crises ridden "Free Market Financial System", and competing strategic and imperial interests/visions in the Baltics and the Middle East about oil and other resources may just intervene here very soon to put a quite different complexion on all this "Free Market" scheming by all the ruling class players currently underway. Not to put too fine a point on it, it is all delicately balanced globally right now, in this historical moment, and could all unravel and spin out of complete control at just about any moment here, in a re-creation of the Great Depression events leading to WW2, only this time nuclearized.
Meanwhile, as it all plays out, myself, I think it is preferable that the net be cast as widely as possible, rather than it all simply being under the aegis and singular dominance of the US Empire with just us in the marital bed, as it is currently vis a vis ourselves and our own national interest. Which just be the thinking of elements of our own national ruling class, further adding to at least my own speculation that there may not be as much touchy feely, of one mind sympatico agreement between this ruling elite of "ours" and the US Empire. Ours especially may be getting some sudden heeby-jeebies feelings about lying down alone, or in a menage a trois bed with the Mexicans, alongside the throbbing dick of the US Empire lion.
Greater safety in numbers?
I think so. For even, at the level of "the street", the lower class European citizenry is not all "of a mind" of the EU itself, with street rabble rousing discomfort being manifested from time to time, about issues of democracy and economic equity.
Capitalism, as a global system dominated by the US Empire, is in a very complex place right now-, and on more than one front.
However, "Ottawa officials say they have overcome what they see as their biggest hurdle: the resistance of provincial governments to an agreement that would force them to allow European corporations to provide their government services, if their bids are the lowest"??? First, that sounds pretty ambiguous: can they bid on managing our schools? Second, that sounds pretty secret: has the Ontario government agreed to this without public discussion?
But objectively, what we will have over the short run, if it in fact is forced through upon us, is a situation in which two of the Greatest Thieves (historically) may fall to quarrelling over our national spoils, and simply fall upon each other. (One can hope.) But just as likely, being two bigger boys, and us the wimpy kick-ass kid who just wants to get along and get home to mommy, they may form a kind of alliance to wait for us after school, and hold each others coats in turn.
Really, our national prospects are all bad. The only real solution that allows us to come through with our manhood/womanhood in tact in the end, is to gather up our national cojones and start defending ourselves as a people, and kick some mofo ass. We are long past due for a real trial by fire "coming of age" strugglde, that just doesn't involve our fighting in somebody else's fuggin' Empire war.
Still, I prefer the political dynamic in this proposed situation, given our bootlick history and tradition as a what has passed for nation, where we at least have two "enemies" we can potetially play off against each other. And let's not forget the dilemma this now puts our own US Empire Loyalists in. Choices. Choices. Two empire history whangs they can potentially orally copulate.
A "love" quandry for them, for sure.
