At an emergency meeting of the Eurogroup on 12 October, 2008, Prime Minister Gordon Brown presented a proposal to deal with the financial crisis. Aside from immediate stabilization plans for the banking system, he stressed the need for a reformed global finance system to solve global financial problems.
Mr Brown received recognition for the proposal, yet a global finance system is Europe's own goal which could confer enormous power to it and have far reaching consequences for the world. A global financial system led or controlled by Europe will greatly increase Europe's power in all spheres.
It would be naïve for either Britain or the U.S. to believe they will be permitted to play a prominent role in such a system.
