"I keep revisiting the Iraq debacle, trying to understand exactly how the judgments I now have to make in the political arena need to improve on the ones I used to offer from the sidelines."
Of the many books and articles Michael Ignatieff has written, one of his most consequential is also one of the most revealing.
It is in this article, a confessional piece penned for the New York Times Magazine in August 2007 in which he retracts his support for the Iraq war, that Mr. Ignatieff offers an intimate account into the trajectory of contemplation which forced him to confront the fact that his own judgment can also be his own greatest weakness.

I think the "lords and masters" (be they the CCCE or other ilk) put the pressure on the Liberal Party to exclude other contenders for the leadership -- perhaps sensing that their time is "short" with this global "readjustment" that may well have spun beyond their control........
And the same question also applies to all political parties and leaders.
