Labatt Deal May Violate NAFTA

Posted on Thursday, February 26 at 09:44 by NAUWATCH

Shutting off the flow of Canadian suds to thirsty Americans smacks of protectionism and must be investigated for trade violations, business and political observers warned yesterday.

The sale by Labatt Brewery owner InBev of Labatt USA to a private equity firm means that in three years Labatt's Canadian breweries won't be able to sell its beer in the U.S.

That will mean job losses here and the closing of Canadian breweries.

"We will go after this because it looks to us like a lack of respect for trade agreements," Irene Mathyssen, London-Fanshawe NDP MP, said yesterday. "We will be questioning this, we need to pursue it."

Doesn't much matter, NAUWATCH. Somewhere in the NAFTA "agreement", there is a clause that allows the US to apply NAFTA as it sees fit. Immediately following this clause is one that does not allow the other participants the same privilege. How else to explain it all?

This is so true and as if Obama is really going to change it. I am sick and tired of opponents of NAFTA crying about renegotiating because as far as I am concerned it is time to scrap the agreement with all its imperfections.

All the premiers as well as our Prime Minister continue to say that free trade is the best thing since sliced bread - a very robotic response, considering that most of the damage to our country and economy can be directly traced back to the FTA and it's spawn.

Now that the US has no money to buy our stuff with, it will be "interesting" to see how they can continue to justify this absurd mantra. (of course, they also continue to insist that marijuana is bad in spite of the mountains of evidence to the contrary)

I would prefer it Labatt's wasn't able to sell its beer in Canada. I'd rather drink my own piss than drink that liquid poison.

Well yes, SM. You certainly have a point! But that's beside the point -- here's a chance to do a little reverse role playing with "our best friends and trading partners"........
