New Restrictions Quickly Added For Air Passengers

Posted on Sunday, December 27 at 15:40 by RickW

In the wake of the terrorism attempt Friday on a Northwest Airlines flight, federal officials on Saturday imposed new restrictions on travelers that could lengthen lines at airports and limit the ability of international passengers to move about an airplane.

The government was vague about the steps it was taking, saying that it wanted the security experience to be “unpredictable” and that passengers would not find the same measures at every airport — a prospect that may upset airlines and travelers alike.

But several airlines released detailed information about the restrictions, saying that passengers on international flights coming to the United States will apparently have to remain in their seats for the last hour of a flight without any personal items on their laps. It was not clear how often the rule would affect domestic flights.

The homeland security secretary, Janet Napolitano, said in a statement Saturday that new measures were “designed to be unpredictable, so passengers should not expect to see the same thing everywhere.”

The statement by Janet Napolitano would suggest no one knows how to handle this.

And of course, no mention here of the lax security which allowed Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to smuggle aboard the explosive..........

The flurry of activity, not to mention the billions spent, since 9-11 has served mainly to establish yet other little bureaucratic/autocratic fiefdoms, the main function of which is not so much the security and safety of the public, but the arbitrary exercise of power and authority. As such, every move made by the arbiters must take into consideration the political fallout, both major and minor.

It is not at all about security, except the security of one's position in the bureacracy.

I've stopped flying in 1968, when they started searching people like criminals.
    Haven't missed a thing.

This travel/flying hysteria is one of the biggest polluters and destroyers of the Earth. 90% of the airliners should be scrapped.
