Somalia Food Aid Bypasses Needy, U.N. Study Finds

As much as half the food aid sent to Somalia is diverted from needy people to a web of corrupt contractors, radical Islamist militants and local United Nations staff members, according to a new Security Council report.

For the last 50 years, aid to 3rd world countries has been hijacked in a manner similar to this report.  Yet, the aid providers and the UN, et al, always act surprised at these findings.

Because of the endemic and rampant  ongoing corruption by many of the "governments" whose people are supposed to be the recipients of this aid, one can only conclude that either the donors are extremely naive - or, they know exactly what's going on, and aid is just a round-about way of paying off local governments and factions, in the guise of "aid".

Again, it`s obvious that the people who rule the world don`t care about those who suffer.

This is not news - this was inevitable.

    Why pretend otherwise?

...it is also why my food feeds my family, not some warlord.

It's inevitably presented by the press as some major story or expos? -- and has been for the last 50 years. Has anyone every bothered to ask why governments why they just keep sending the loot anyway?

I believe food and aid started being sent after the Ethiopian invasion. It was hoped that the Ethiopians would have better luck than the UN after our massive fiasco.

Of course, sending the corrupt to manage the massively corrupt is just asinine. I'm surprised that 50% made it to those that it was actually intended for. Not bad considering that there is no acting government for 99% of the country.

If my thesis is in any way correct, the "recipients" of the aid shouldn't grab ALL of it, or the "donors" would become highly pi$$ed off. But "only" grabbing 50% means many folks would say that it is better than nothing - and go back to sleep.

50% in a war zone is still more than what gets to AIDS kids from this Toronto charity which spends upwards of 80% of donations on telemarketing and "other" expenses:

That?s what is wrong with some government officials; they are not giving to the people what they supposedly should have. Say for instance that aid, I guess corrupt officials or corruption can?t be phased out in any government department. Even in private. Some may have taken it a long way but because of too much desires, some even disregarded the law. Can you still remember the voters? fraud issue of ACORN? Well, gladly it is time that ACORN disbands. finally, the acorn has dropped far from the tree.
