Report Details ‘Shocking’ Abuses At G20 Summit

A full-scale public inquiry is needed in light of the widespread and violent trampling of civil rights by police at last summer’s $1-billion G20 summit in Toronto, a new report concludes.

The call for an inquiry is among recommendations in the report — by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and National Union of Public and General Employees — which is aimed at holding governments accountable and avoiding a recurrence.

“The many violations of civil liberties that occurred during the summit, such as illegal detentions and searches and excessive uses of force, cannot have simply been the actions of a few bad apples,” the report states.

“Rather, given the scope and severity of the violations of rights that occurred during the G20, it is difficult to view this situation as anything other than a failure of policy and training.”

The 59-page report — slated for release Monday — is the result of three days of public hearings in Toronto and Montreal in November.

Dozens of people caught up in the weekend mayhem last June — 1,105 people were arrested — spoke up, as did lawyers and academics. Police refused to take part.

The braindead non- thinking puppet police did what the Nazi's did-JUST FOLLOWING ORDERS. These idiots don't realize the slippery slope we are on, and the fact that if they abuse and oppress others, then they too, are ultimately, not free! But of course, like George Carlin said," The police should be staffed with people who possess a certain amount of intellect and moral goodwill. Hasn't been tried yet." Instead we have a bunch of psychopaths, bullies, and those bullied in high school who get off on abusing others, when the position should really be about 'To serve and protect.' To me, police should be the guardians of a free, civil society, not merely protectors of the wealth.

    JUST FOLLOWING ORDERS
That didn't cut the mustard at Nuremburg. But I suppose, like most crooks and bullies, they never think they might end up on the losing end............

You,re right. But had Germany won the war... I mean, yeah, the 'winning side' never prosecutes their own. That's why McGuinty won't do a public inquiry. The 'winning side' has too much to hide.

You guys are all cop haters. Those tree-hugging pinko demonstrators were all violent anarchists or their dupes. They had no good reason for being there and should have been at work instead. The cops were just doing their job and showed remarkable restraint despite the provocation of the protesters.

Originally, I was totally on side with the cops and government. Then came the costs, the secret law and then the videos.

Harper and company screwed up by switching the G20 to Toronto at the last minute. As a result, the planning was rushed and sloppy. The three tenants of any project are time, money and quality. You can only choose 2. They still put on a quality show for the G20 leaders, but since they had no time, this led to astronomical costs. Security was overblown. Pittsburg proved that you need not spend more than a few hundred million if you have the time and planning to do so. That is Harper's fault.

McGuinty owns the secret law and passing poor orders down to the police forces involved. Much of that is a result of the lack of timing and the overzealous use of perceived power that he has. The secret law was just unbelievably stupid. Not telling the public was even dumber.

Bill Blair owns the request for the secret law and implementation of the security zone. He also owns the initial lack of response against the black bloc, and then the immense overreaction to all other protesters immediately afterward.

The individual cops own their own actions. If you are stupid enough to think you can get away with beating someone because you wear a uniform in the day and age when everyone owns a video phone, you are a moron.

Every level was complicit in this failure. While Harper may not have meant for any of this to happen, he planted the seed by shortening the planning cycle. McGuinty may not have wanted to see draconian security forces decend on his watch, but he also didn't want to look bad and so aquieced to every request made to him.

Blair didn't want to look heavy handed and so let the bloc get away with vandalism on day one and then found out that the powers that be were screaming about burning cars that evening. His reaction was to berate his subordinates, who in turn let loose the dogs of war upon peaceful protesters in their crackdown to show that they were not impotent.

But then, this is only my opinion of what happened. What really happened is anyone's guess. As a result, I support the call for a full public inquiry. This should not happen in Canada.

Bottom line: This was no accident or oversight. Just look at the cages they stuffed people into. This was designed to instill fear in the people. The brutality inflicted on people was unprecedented in this country. All levels of government, as well as robotic police officers disregarding human rights, share the blame!

  12. Tue Mar 08, 2011 9:30 pm
Or you could say that the cages were designed to be a temporary alternative to putting protesters into jails with actual criminals. I'll go with you insofar as a public tribunal, but I won't step into the abyss and say that it was planned. It was a PR and political nightmare for all levels of government involved. I can't imagine that they would willingly want to shoot themselves in the foot like that.

Why would we hate those who use weapons we buy them, to beat up and abuse innocent , unarmed people, for fun and cheap thrills, with the support of the government, who are, after all, elected to control us , not to represent us?
We should turn the other cheek, right?
